Woodley sign International

Woodley Sports are pleased to announce a major signing, with former Manchester City and Northern Ireland star Jeff Whitley joining the club this week until the end of the current season. Twenty-nine year old Whitley, who has been out of football since leaving Wrexham in May 2008, has been training regularly with Wolverhampton Wanderers to get himself back to full fitness and Manager Mick McCarthy is hoping his spell with Woodley Sports will see him gain match fitness again soon.

Jeff Whitley - Club Career:

Whitley joined Manchester City as a ten year old in 1989 and began his club career as a trainee in 1996, making over 120 league and cup appearances for the first-team. He had a two-month loan spell at Wrexham in the 1998?99 season and in March 2002, having fallen out of favour at Manchester City, joined Notts County on loan for the remainder of the 2001?02 season. He had a three-month loan spell at Notts County in the 2002?03 season, returning to Manchester City in January 2003 but was released by the club in March 2003 as he did not feature in manager Kevin Keegan's plans.

Signol Athletic are sorry to report the devastating news yesterday (29/9/2008) that Neil Rourke, Signol JFC Welfare Officer and Woodley Sports committee stalwart had collapsed and died (aged 40 years).

Neil, a successful manager with Signol Athletic taking teams to the Cheshire Cup final and winning the Umbro tournament as well as a prestigious European tournament in Holland will be missed by all. Neil had been the main driver in setting up and managing the youth team at Woodley Sports and establishing the reserves a year later. He was also the mainstay of the Stockport District team set up in previous years.

You couldn't have met a more dedicated family man who had time for everyone. His passing will leave a massive void in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the privilege of being in his company.

Our thoughts go out to Sue, John and Kelly at this sad time.

Signol Athletic Chairman
