A brief history…..
Blackburn Rifle and Pistol Club can trace its origin back to 1907, when founded as Blackburn Rifle Club, two years before Bleriot made the first cross-channel flight. In later Years it became Blackburn Miniature Rifle Club when it was predominantly small bore prone rifle. There have been several breaks in its continuing history, including the period during the Second World War 1939 - 1945.
After the war the Club was located alongside the canal in Mill Hill, Blackburn. At that time it was a 100yds out-door range. Later the Club moved to Canterbury Street Barracks in the town and more recently in 1982 the club took up residence in its own building at the formerly Audley Hall Mill in Blackburn.
At the time of the Dunblane incident in 1997 the club had about 360 members, of whom about 95% were pistol shooters. In the year after the "voluntary" confiscation of cartridge handguns the numbers dropped to 80 members.
The Club's activities were reviewed and small bore carbines were purchased together with an ML revolver and new competitions were invented in-house to encourage members to try out new disciplines. Since that time the range of shooting opportunities has been expanded and, together with the friendly relaxed atmosphere at the club, the membership numbers have gradually increased to the current number of about 200.
The club premises are open on five evenings per week as well as Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The club hosts a number of Open Evenings each year for Round Table and similar organisations to try target shooting.
In 2007 the Club will celebrate the 100th year of its founding and the 25th anniversary of its move to the Blackburn Shooting Centre in Audley Hall Mill.
