League Results

Beamers v COI Highballers     14th June 6pm (Tie 18-18)

This was a game I was looking forward to. It was a game I wanted Beamers to win, as we have not done too well against COI in the past. We wanted to win this game obviously to get ourselves more points and improve our standing within this league. Play started and both teams were putting up their shots. This was our most competitive game in the league so far. No one team managed to get more than a point or two ahead before getting caught up. At half time we were one point up. When play resumed, there was more of the same, with the game becoming even more competitive as each team felt they had victory within their grasp. Whilst playing, it was impossible to tell who was in the lead but the 18-18 result although slightly anti-climactic, was probably the fairest result on the day.

Beamers v MOD   14th June  7.30pm   (won   14-7)

This was a game we expected to win if our history against MOD was to tell the tale. Uncharacteristically for the Beamers B team, we started fairly slowly in this match and didn’t play as well as I know we could have. There were a few bad passes and other mistakes that slowed our progress. The first half ended with us being slightly ahead. We improved a great deal in the 2nd half, with some solid play being carried performed by our defence. This enabled our attack to make good use of the ball at the other end to secure more goals and to extend our lead from a narrow one, to a convincing one. We won, but we would hope to do even better the next time we meet this team.

Beamers v Improvers   21st June (we won 17-15)

This was a game we anticipated winning, but we also knew that Improvers would not lie down easily. As their name suggests, they really have improved. Both halves were the same story. Very evenly paced playing was going on, with the ball going from end to end. At one point in the first half we had pulled away and were about 4 points up but the Improvers pulled it back so that when we finished at half time we were only one point ahead. Once play had resumed we dug in to try and maintain our very narrow lead. The game went the same way in the second half, with each team getting the ball into their attacking half very well. The Beamers were able to make the most of their shooting opportunities in the second half and managed not to let the Improvers catch up on them, so although we won by a slim margin, we managed to pull a little ahead and hold on to our lead in the second half.

Beamers v Legal Ladies 5th July (we won 32-4)

This was a game we expected to win. My only point of anxiety for today was whether the Sharp Shooters would lose their game, thereby allowing beamers B to snatch 4th place in this league. Anyway, we had a very good game. The first half was very easy. The ball was passed very easily to the Goal attack and Goal shooter, who made use of almost every opportunity they got to shoot. Not many goals were saved by the oppositions defence. At the end of the first half the score was 19-3.

The second half came and it brought with it two slightly different teams. Both teams defended a bit more strongly with the result that not as many goals were scored in the second half as in the first. On balance Beamers had the upper hand and were able to run away with the scoring in the second half as we did in the first. As we anticipated, this was not a very difficult match and was won comfortably 32 – 4.

Match Report        Beamers (8) v Heathrow (17)

St Lucia Challenge Competition

This was the first game of the day, and frankly this is the one I wanted us to get out of the way first, as Heathrow seemed to be the hardest competition we were going to face that day.

The game started well, with both teams managing to get the ball into the net. Marie was playing the Goal shooting position for the Beamers and had to work very hard to get around the very tall Goal Keeper. Unfortunately the Heathrow team begun to pull away from us about three quarters of the way into the first half which ended with a score of 9 v 5 in Heathrow’s favour.

We made a change in Wing Defence with Anne Hansle coming on for Anne-Marie Donovan. Once again there was a lot of good game playing going on in the second half. Unfortunately for us the momentum the Heathrow team had built up in the first half was not slown down by the half time break. They carried on as they ended the first half and the game finished on a score of 17 v 8 to Heathrow. Although we had lost the first game of this tournament, we had all played the strongest game we could play.
