Report on Netball tournament held at Leyton, Saturday 12 May 2007

A mix of the A and B team mates put together a happy band to take part in the above event.  The draw had already been made and six games lay before them.

Game 1             Beamers 6 v SAS 10

The first game started off well, the SAS team putting in a brave show of six players.  This did not impede them, after all Beamers know from experience that 6 players is not necessarily a disadvantage.  SAS managed to mark Ann and Lorraine well, however there were more than one handy passes into Clare and Marie utilising Lorraine to get into good positioning for some great shots.  Julia proved that she can indeed jump and interceptions were made, helping to turn the game Beamers way during the first half.  Alas this was not sustained during the second half and SAS triumphed.

Game 2             Beamers 7 V Olympus 11

The very friendly Olympus showed that just the right touch of aggressive skill can turn the tide.  Beamers resorting to short passes in the mid field managed to stem the flow of interceptions by the other team, however this still was not quite enough.  The match was taken by the Olympians.

Game 3 & 4      Beamers 3 v Kelmscott 12

                          Beamers 7 v Chafford 11

Further demonstrations to Beamers that the right touch of aggressive skill can take the match.  Despite heroic attempts to mark the opposing Goal Attacks out of the match the shooting from the Goal Shooters and support from their fellow attackers was spot on in making a big difference in the end results.  A few sloppy passes and the games were lost.  A lesson to be learnt by all.

Game 5                          Beamers 0 v Raiders 23

What can be said about this, other than look at the score line?  The Raiders played a very good game and went on to qualify for the final easily.  They gave a good lesson in just how Netball should be played; quick, decisive and well practiced.  It was clear that these ladies were no stranger to the game.  The final score did not reflect the effort put in by the team.

Game 6                          Beamers 7 v Sapprika 7

At last, a much closer result against the fellow underdogs.  The opposing Centre carried much of the play for this team (bounding almost effortlessly to intercept the ball).  Despite this display Beamers played as well as they could bearing in mind the number of defeats and tiredness that I’m sure more than one team member felt.  A little of the Beamer brightness emerged in the first half with the short sharp passes being used to advantage.  A few interceptions were made by the defensive team and being turned to Beamers advantage, however the same was true for the opposing team.

Beamers were outplayed throughout the tournament, with other teams showing that their training and speed can be turned effectively to their advantage.  Despite this a good day was had by all with suggestions and ideas on how play can be improved in the future.
