When you scan line drawings for colouring, you want to end up
with a 300dpi CMYK file.
But you start with black and white lines, and it's best to scan
them in a mode that suits the line work. There are two schools
of thought:
Many people scan in Greyscale mode at 300dpi; this involves a single conversion to CMYK once the scan has been adjusted. It does, however, involve considerable skill to adjust the file correctly, so that the lines are black and of the correct density, and the paper is white and free of smudges.
I prefer to scan in Line Art mode at 600dpi; the scans you get are cleaner, sharper, and require no subsequent adjustment for brightness or contrast. It's this method I'll describe here.
