CMYK files are bigger than RGB files, but don't allow for any more colours. So why use them?

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK. These are the four colours of ink that printers mix to make every colour in the spectrum.

CMYK files have a separate, adjustable channel for each of these inks, which makes it possible to precisely control how a file will print. Another drawback of RGB is that it can produce luminous colours which don't reproduce in CMYK printing, so you can get a nasty surprise if you use RGB files for print work.
