How Files Work

What Files are Made of

There are two kinds of graphic files; Bitmap and Vector.

Bitmap files store pictures as a grid of squares, known as pixels. These files can take up a great deal of memory, but are very good at representing things with irregular surfaces, like paintings and photographs. It is this type of file we tend to use for colouring.

Vector files store pictures as a set of outlines, filled with colours. They don't take up much memory compared to bitmap files, but are only really good for representing things with sharp edges, containing flat colours, like logos, diagrams and line drawings. For this reason, we won't be dealing with vector files here.
