Virtual Blueline

The easiest way to colour artwork in Photoshop is to create what I call a Virtual Blueline.

The blueline system was a method of colouring in which the outlines were printed in blue on watercolour paper, and also in black on a clear acetate overlay. The colouring was done on the paper copy, then the black overlay was lined up on top, giving the finished art. This meant you could use thick paint or crayons on the colouring, without spoiling the outlines.

In Photoshop we can do the same thing; make a layer to colour on, then float the outlines on a transparent layer above that.

It may seem a little complicated at first, but it will give you a lot more control when you come to colour your pages.
