And Then He Kissed Her...100 years of Mills and Boon
I recently visited Manchester Central Library for the "And Then He Kissed Her..." exhibition. I loved it. It celebrates 100 years of Mills and Boon. The library is a bastion of learning, and is the place where I spent many an hour as an undergraduate student writing essays. So it was a real thrill to see Mills and Boon celebrated there. Here are some photos I took at the time.
Books from the very early days of Mills and Boon, the 1920s', when the company began to specialise in romance books. |
Books from the 1930s, with the frail heroine being rescued by the hero! |
Not the best of photographs, but the book on the left is called "Take Me! Break Me!" Who could resist? |
Wartime saw brides from the forces and women venturing out of the home. |
The 1950's saw the medical romance take hold. And that "Mystery at Butlin's" book! Now we have St. Tropez and tropical islands but then it was Butlin's Holiday Camp! |
The uniform look of the 1950's. Some juicy books there! |
The 1950's and the medical romance. The book in the middle of the lower row is called "The Man In Authority." What are the chances of that coming out today? |
The '80's and '90's saw the books that look more like the books wer read today. A more passionate embrace on the cover and actual sex scenes! |
Right up to date. I think I've met the model in the Santa hat!
A corset made entirely out of Mills and Boon covers. Awesome! |
