Loughborough Liberal Democrats are pleased to announce the selection of
their Parliamentary Prospective Candidate for next year’s General Election.
At a Hustings Meeting of Members, held recently in John Storer House, Mike
Willis was the successful candidate.
Mike has lived in Loughborough since 1992 and knows the town and the surrounding
villages well. Currently a Lecturer in Media, Multimedia and Education at New
College, Nottingham his previous career has been in Radio, as Presenter, Producer,
Consultant and Radio Management, including with OAK FM. Mike also served for six
years in the Royal Air Force.
Mike says “I am very grateful to Liberal Democrat Members in Loughborough and the
surrounding towns and villages for having confidence in me as their Prospective
Liberal Democrat Candidate for next year’s General Election. I look forward to
convincing voters in Loughborough Constituency that Liberal Democrats have the
policies to rescue Britain from the present dire state of affairs.”
Mike continued “Nick Clegg leads an able team of shadow ministers. Vince Cable
has the best ideas for reviving the economy and curtailing public borrowing.
Liberal Democrats have the strongest environmental policies, particularly on
global warming. We recognise the importance of Britain having a strong voice
in Europe if we are to prosper in an increasingly globalised economy. Liberal
Democrats led the opposition to the invasion of Iraq and have questioned the
headlong rush into replacing Trident.”
Among the issues Mike will be campaigning on at local level are:
• Better quality jobs and sustainable employment
• More affordable housing to be built on brown field sites
• Improved public transport to and from villages
• Free access to social and bridging education
• Strengthening of community policing on housing estates
• Increased support for community groups and John Storer House
• Loughborough should have a ‘Community Radio Station’
Mike added “I hope to persuade voters that a Liberal Democrat MP would be in the
best position to represent them at Westminster. The Conservative candidate does not
live in the constituency and the Labour candidate is tarnished by his 100% support
for a discredited Government. A BNP candidate would be completely beyond the pale
as far as I am concerned.”
