The movie came out in 1978 by Nepenthe Productions and was directed first by John Hubley who died in 1977 and work was then passed onto Martin Rosen.  The animated movie is different from the book, there are a few characters that didn't make it, such as Hawkbit for one.  But regardless of those small details the movie did pull in US$30 million so it wasn't anything to be sniffed at the box office.

There were a few mistakes in the animation though.  One of them was at the shed scene when the rabbits are at the cemetary where Bigwig disappears and reappears again as the rabbits head into the shed.  The second one is during Holly's flashback of Efrafa before Watership Down rabbits even heard of thw warren.  But you can see Bigwig talking to one of the Efrafan rabbits as it was a scene later used in the film.

But regardless of those, which can be forgiven.  The animators brought Richard Adam's written work perfectly into a nice fluid movie.  Especially the beginning scene after the credits, the artwork done on Hazel then was perfect.
