Salamandastron: Caverns - Archery Range
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
As the training room cannot fit a truly adequate, large enough archery range, this large room, down in the caverns of the mountain, has been converted into one. It, in itself, is rather cavernous, and is more long than it is wide. The furthest wall from the entrance is lined with archery targets, at least a ten, and they are each separated by a few feet. Along the closest wall to the door, barrels are placed, containing arrows as well as bows, to practice with. Further, the walls are lined with torches, though the ones behind the archery targets are protected by metal grates, of a sort. The room is relatively well lit, and is usually a moderate temperature.

The door opens a beast walks in carrying a large bundle of arrows in his paws, it is Quinten and the arrows appear to be fresh from the craft room and the fletcher. He moves over to one of the large barrels and deposits them in one of the large barrels designed to hold them. Once he has deposited them he looks around and spotting the Major begins to make his way towards him brushing wood shavings off his tunic. "Morning Major."

Only a nod is given back to the voice as Jarril lets off another shaft into the target before replying.  "Late shift?"  The major up early for any of the young lot to be down here yet.

Quinten shakes his head, "No Major up early, couldn't sleep so went for a run and finished off some things in the crafts room."

Jarril shows a sly grin as he walks down to pick off the arrows poking out from the target he's been shooting at all morning.  "Same, though I've heard you've been doing okay since you've arrived back."  Grasping an arrow, the major pulls it out.  "Not heard anything from you after you left, didn't want to take up the offer on writing then?"

Quinten moves to pick up a bow and starts to string it. "I wrote some letter sir but things kind of went down the drain after the vermin attacked an aye never got chance to send em. Now i can't find em they where in me room."

Jarril nods his head.  "Ah, well.  Forget about it then, can't be helped."  He looks at Quinten with some thoughtful look on his face.  "Hmm, you do know that Flaxpaw is back at the mountain, right?"

Quinten nods his head, "I heard sir yes, not seen her yet though...how is she?" He shiftsnad selects an arrow and loads it onto his bow before raising it and sighting along it.

Jarril slowly takes out the last arrow and smiles.  "Oh you be pleased that she's not seeing any vermin anymore.  But, aye she's going okay."  The major smiles, wondering if Harper will ask permission or go to his other father for that.  "Anyways, just wondering that she may get back into the patrol again but after you two had a few arguements.  I was hoping that wouldn't be repeated."

Quinten releases the arrow and it thunks into the outer ring of the target, he frowns at it and then nods. "Oh no sir...arguement..was over her seeing tha vermin i could see he was a bad one but she didn't want to listen. I'll not start anything."

Jarril pauses in walking back and looks at Quinten.  "No, do start something if anything like that happens again.  I should've stepped in on the matter.  Vermin and hares don't mix, I know that now."  Looking at his bow he shakes his head.  "Quinten, there are some very rare vermin that are good.  Me and Colonel Zoe used to know a marten named kevarr.  Lived at the abbey, she ended up good in her own little way, but those are rare."  Giving a cough, he smiles.  "Anyways, what I am trying to say is that if you see anything like that happen again, do get into it or find someone else to help out."

Quinten nods his head and picks up another arrow and shifts, "Yes sah....i'll do that. I should have kept me temper and come spoke to you about it. Was hoping Harper would have said something or done something though as he seemed to get on with Flax better then me."

Those words bring an amusing look on the major's face as Jarril makes his way back to where he started from and slowly selects another arrow.  "Hmm, yes..."  He coughs and clears his throat.  "They do seem to be getting on well, aye.."

Quinten eyes the Major and his ears perk forwards, "Ye ok there major? Or is there something i should know?"

Jarril shakes his head.  "Nope, nothing to know right about now.  I'm sure things will work out and we all know eventually, er, wot."  The major aims a arrow and gets it into the centre again.

Quinten looks at Jarril and then smirks softly, "Aye sir am sure we'll all hear about it soon, ye say it was just You and Flax and Harper who came back?"

Jarril hmms.  "Well, most of the recruits.  I think they be heading back though in a day or two, some new recruits as well perhaps."  Lowering the bow the hare smiles.  "I am sorry to regret but I won't be heading back with them.  I think a major or a colonel is heading off with them."

Quinten looks at Jarril, "You are a Major sah...but i understand what you mean, guess you've done your stint with em." He pauses to release anoother arrow, hitting further towards the centre of the target this time. "Had they started the bell tower?"

Jarril nods.  "I think Skipper Hallow arrived there to help in getting the materials so aye, I think they would've started building it now."  Sighing slightly.  "Sorry how things worked out over there, I know how much you wanted for it to succeed."

Quinten smiles sadly and puts his bow back, "Aye i'm sorry too sah... i let you down big time."

Jarril pffts.  "Let's not start that one again.  You didn't, you brought yourself back up, you helped get this place back in our control.  I'd say that you learnt the lesson well and will be a fine officer in the end.  Though excuse me when I say I was a bit worried back then."

Quinten nods his head, "You had every right to be worried sah, i'd wandered off the path a bit but you helped stick me back on it."

Jarril nods. "So who was teaching you back here?"

Quinten shrugs, "Erm most everyone really Lt. Honeydew, Major Sanhorn ye know tha usual."

Jarril grins.  "What about Lt. Zeraph...?"  Not firing anymore arrows, the major is happy that he's still got what it takes and moves to sitting down on the bench at the other side of the room now.  "Also, have things quietened down now from the others, since you know the demotion?"

Quinten nods, "Oh yes the Lt. an me have been boxing alot as well an ya things were never really tha bad to begin with."

Jarril nods.  "Good, well keep at it."  He pauses for a moment.  "Fire another arrow again and let me see what you're doing wrong, hmm."

Quinten nods and picks up another arrow, he sets it in place and sights along it, hiw bow wavering slightky to the left as he shifts to peer along the arrow. He releases it and once again it hits the target to the left. "I'm better at unarmed combat but from the sounds of it, thats not an allowed speciality."

Nodding his head, Jarril smiles. "Well, usually it's not when the other is armed themselves."  Getting up he marches over and stands behind Quinten.  "You're not keeping your arm still while you're aiming.  Exhale and hold your breath as well before firing.  Try and lock the arm holding the bow still."

Quinten nods his head and does as he's told, breathing out slowly and holding himself still, his arm trembles as he tries to lock it and when he fires the arrow sinks into the target just off centre. "I know sah....still its useful i found...to combine unarmed tactics with sword fighting/"

Jarril nods.  "Better..."  He steps back with a grin.  "Well, remember that you can't be good at everything, choose which you are good at, one or two things and stick to it, practise all the time and you never know, one day you be teaching young hares yourself and pulling your fur out on their actions."

Quinten laughs softly and shakes his head and glances over at the other buck, "Can you really see me teaching others? Maybe how to keep a tidy journal but i don't think i'd be much of a teacher."

Grinning, Jarril replies.  "Well, we were all at your age at one point and getting into trouble, doesn't mean that you can't end up passing your skills and experience to others younger than you later on.  Besides, you already got something behind you now, the retaking of this mountain.  No doubt there be some wet behind the ears leverets just entering the recruit service will need to learn from that.  It's how it goes, so yes, one day you will end up teaching what you know.  Only way to pass on knowledge to a new generation and keep the patrol running.  But if you don't think you be up to it, that's fine as well."  Snerk.

Quinten smiles and waves his ears back and forth, "Give me ten seasons or so sah and aye'll probably be teaching em, yar right is tha only way tae keep tha patrol running." He shifts and raises his bow again. "I'd like to concentrateo n me sword play more but i've got to follow the lower level recruit programme so its hard."

Jarril gives a thoughtful rub of his whiskers and nods.  "Well, let me work something out, see if something can be done about that.  Anyways, I best go and see my patrol for morning roster."  Turning to go.  "You make it, you've already proved that by working hard.  Laters, recruit."

Quinten smiles and wavees a paw, "See you later sah, take care now." He turns back to firing arrows at tuhe targets.
