1994 - 1999: PowerGen UK PLC Connah’s Quay Power Station, Flintshire - Safety Advisor

  • Safety Advisor & member of Performance & Environment Team, part of station team operating PowerGen’s flagship combined-cycle gas-turbine station (CCGT). 1450MW, 4 units, including gas treatment plant, consuming >3% of UK gas consumption. This period covered the transition from a greenfield site to fully operational CCGT and included the setting up of safety management systems, production of policy & procedures, training requirements definition, risk assessment & auditing systems.

  • Key achievements for station during that time: - Consecutive Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards from Rospa - Chairman’s Award for Innovation (and Silver Business Excellence Award - Safety) for implementation of gas leak detection system on gas-turbines. - Investors in People certification - ISO14000 accreditation - International Safety Rating System (ISRS) Level 6 baseline audit

  • Corporate Safety Branch, PowerGen PLC 7 month secondment to Corporate Safety, PowerGen HQ - Experience in section with corporate responsibility for safety within PowerGen. Included safety management advice & assistance to: - Kinetica PLC: Gas company with operations in London, Killingholme & Tamworth. Providing guidance to management teams on safety management - Tapada CCPP: PowerGen joint venture (JV) in Portugal. Gas-fired power station under construction. 1991 - 1994: Rheidol Power Station, PowerGen Aberystwyth - Head of Engineering & Safety

  • Head of Engineering & Safety department at PowerGen’s largest hydro-electric scheme, in Mid-Wales. Plant included 8 turbines ranging from 21MW to 8kW, 63 square miles of catchment, 11kV & 33kV overhead lines & switching substations, computer controlled telemetry system, visitor centre with >15 visitors pa, transport, reservoirs & dams. Responsibilities included safety management for station & acting as one of 3 Senior Authorised Persons (SAP) on station under PowerGen Safety Rules.

  • Key achievements for station during that time: - Consecutive Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards from Rospa - Progress from ISRS level 1 (baseline) to Level 3 - >1000 days without lost time accident

1984 - 1991: Rheidol Power Station, PowerGen Aberystwyth - Maintenance Engineer

  • Head of maintenance department with responsibility for all electrical, mechanical and C&I plant. Safety Representative & SAP.

1981 - 1984: Connah’s Quay Power Station Flintshire - 3rd Engineer

  • Assistant engineer in electrical & instrument department at original power station on Connah’s Quay site - 180MW coal-fired station.

1979 - 1981: CEGB Various locations - Engineering trainee

  • Two year post-graduate training at various locations in CEGB leading to Trained Engineer status

  • Temporary clerical support to planning & admin departments.
