Saturday/Sunday, May 29/30. Last year's winners Paul Bourne and Louis Venezia (Subaru Impreza WRC) head an impressive line-up of the island's foremost rallying talent, with no significant names missing from the 57-car list, released today. After the success of last year's event - with 90 starters it was the biggest motor sport event ever staged in the region - the BRC is confident of meeting its increased target of 100 cars in 2004. Rally Barbados is once again an integral part of the Barbados Rally Carnival, which attracted a record 30 crews from the UK and mainland Europe last year to contest the two-day rally and the International RallySprint run at the Vaucluse Raceway the weekend before. A similar level of interest promises at least as many European crews this year, while an increased number of regional inquiries has come from leading drivers in Jamaica, Trinidad and elsewhere. Organising committee chairman Barry Gale commented: "We are really excited at the level of interest, both in the island and from overseas. In recent years, our headline event has gone from strength to strength, and I am confident we will reach our target. I'm already into stand-bys and, although we may have some drop-outs from the current list, I'm sure we'll fill all 100 spots." Bourne will face the toughest possible competition that Barbados can offer, including Roger Skeete/Dave Crawford (Ford Escort WRC), Trevor Manning/James Betts (Mitsubishi Evo V) and Roger Mayers/Max Ferri (Ford Focus WRC), all three crews regular winners in rallies and speed events. With nine victories already under his belt in the island's premier event, however, Skeete has to be considered the favourite to challenge Bourne; Manning will be hoping to repeat his 1999 victory, while Mayers is aiming for his first, after finishing mere seconds behind Skeete two years ago. There is strength in quantity as well as quality, particularly in the hotly-competitive Modified Open class, which has attracted 17 provisional entries, including the trio of Toyota Starlets, driven by Barry Mayers, Cliff Roett and Jason Parkinson, who thrilled crowds with their battle for honours last year, climbing into the overall Top 10 in the process. Jonathan Still's mighty BMW M3 was beaten by the Starlets last year, something the driver is keen to avoid in 2004. Details of the European and regional entries are currently being finalised, with a later cut-off date that that for the local drivers; these will be announced in the coming weeks. Revamp for web sites New for 2004 is a completely re-vamped Rally Barbados web site, through which competitors and spectators alike will be able to keep in touch with developments during the eight-week build-up to the event. All fans need to do is log on to www.rallybarbados.com, where they will find background information on the event, which will be updated and expanded as the weeks go by - a full spectator guide will also be available for download. Fans can register to receive updates by e-mail, post their own views on the Message Board, or contact members of the organising committee. In addition, the Club's own web site - www.rallyclub.com - has recently been redesigned, while further information on the broader aspects of the Barbados Rally Carnival can be found on its dedicated site, at www.barbadosrallycarnival.com. This year's event looks set to be a hard-fought affair - only Ireland's Kenny McKinstry is now missing from the list of previous winners, so four will go head-to-head over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, May 29/30. Co-driven in his Toyota Celica GT4 by Justin Morin, Panton will face Roger Skeete/Dave Crawford (Ford Escort WRC) - with nine wins, Skeete heads the winner's league table - 1999 winner Trevor Manning and James Betts (Mitsubishi Evo V) and last year's winning crew, Paul Bourne/Louis Venezia (Subaru Impreza WRC). Of the regional drivers, Panton has by far the best record of success in Barbados - in addition to his victory in 1998, beating Bourne by 53 secs, he has twice finished second: in 1994, 51 secs behind Skeete, two years later 27 secs adrift of McKinstry. It was also in 1996 that he made his first foray into Europe, finishing an impressive 19th in the RAC Rally, Britain's round of the World Rally Championship, an achievement made all the more remarkable in a year in which only 82 of the 162 starters finished the gruelling event. Returning after mixed fortunes last year are Panton's fellow-countrymen Gary Gregg/Hugh Hutchinson (Mitsubishi Evo VI), John Powell/Michael March (Mitsubishi Evo VII) and Peter Moodie Jnr/Mike Fennel Jnr (Mitsubishi Evo VI). By finishing fourth, Gregg and Hutchinson claimed the award as highest-placed overseas crew last year, while Powell and March were eighth overall - their third top 10 finish in seven years - and second in Group N. For Moodie and Fennell, however, the weekend did not go so well - they retired after an accident on the first route of day one, sliding off the Canefield stage and striking the same bridge that claimed local favourite Manning. The provisional regional entry also includes Peter Morris from Trinidad, with co-driver Dino Pereira; Morris finished 17th overall last year in his Mitsubishi Evo VI. Meanwhile, Steve Ollivierre from St Vincent - a regular in Barbados events for 10 years or so - returns, entered in Modified 6, where he will be hoping his Mitsubishi Mirage can keep in touch with the Suzuki Ignis of the BRC's reigning champion driver Sean Gill. Ollivierre finished 21st overall and second in group to Gill last year. Adding the 12 regional entries to the 57-car local list revealed last week brings the total provisional entry so far to 69; although the identity of the European entries is yet to be confirmed, with a later cut-off date than that for the local and regional drivers, the BRC is confident of meeting its increased target of 100 starters in 2004 . . . and that will make Rally Barbados once again the biggest motor sport event ever staged in the region. Noting the interest from the region, organising committee chairman Barry Gale said: "We are very pleased to see Jeffrey Panton back on the list, after being absent for the last two years; he is always a competitive driver, and has quite a following in Barbados . . . as we see more of the entry list confirmed, it is becoming clearer just what a hot event Rally Barbados 2004 is going to be." As the first European entries arrived on the docks at Portsmouth on the south coast of England in readiness for shipping to the Caribbean, Carnival organisers confirmed the programme for the region's biggest motor sport event. Friday (April 23) is the final deadline for the near-capacity European entry to assemble, before being loaded onto a Geest Line freighter for the trip across the Atlantic. Geest's Sandy Wherrett reported from England on Wednesday (April 21): "the first few cars have already arrived. All the cars have to be at Portsmouth by Friday, so we can load them early next week." And that deadline has meant many hours burning the midnight oil for professional rally preparation companies and part-time mechanics throughout the UK; entries are slated from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as countries in mainland Europe. The drivers, co-drivers, mechanics and support teams will not be reunited with their cars until the third week of May, when they land in Barbados on a Virgin Atlantic 747-400. More than half these competitors will be new to the experience of competing in Barbados, but returning Dutch co-driver Jos Smeets - an experienced rally organiser in his own country - had some words of praise and encouragement: "As we are organisers ourselves, we have great respect for the Barbados Rally Carnival organisers, because they are on an island and it's very difficult to get enough marshals and sponsors. "We are coming back to Barbados because of the fantastic atmosphere, which starts when you get on the airplane and carries on for two weeks. Also, we come back to improve on last year's result - we have completely rebuilt the car and will start on Kumho tyres, instead of last year's street tyres." Jos is co-driver for his father Michel in a 1976 Opel Ascona A, which will contest the historic class. They are the organisers of the Netherlands Rally, and last year used their visit to Barbados to help promote their own event. Jos said: "We also like to meet teams from all over the world and invite them to our own rally; after meeting him in Barbados last year, Kevin Procter from England entered our event, and he was very enthusiastic about it." The Barbados Rally Carnival will comprise two international motor sport events: over the first weekend - May 22/23 - competitors will tackle the Vaucluse Raceway International RallySprint at the popular facility in the parish of St Thomas; the following weekend - May 29/30 - crews will face 32 special stages island-wide in Rally Barbados. Built around these two events is a programme of activities and entertainment, including beach parties and boat trips, which will provide the hundreds of overseas visitors with a unique opportunity to share their passion for motor sport with a holiday in Barbados. Rally Carnival founder Greg Cozier says: "One of the key aims behind the Carnival has always been to introduce rally enthusiasts to the delights of Barbados as a tourist destination, while they enjoy their favourite sport. The motor sport programme is matched with a social calendar, allowing our visitors the chance to have a good look at our island." Despite their problems, they were determined not to miss out on returning to the island for the Barbados Rally Carnival, which one driver says "just gets better every year". Last Friday (April 23) was the deadline for cars to be delivered in readiness for loading, so Fred 'The Builder' Davidson set off a couple of days early from his Yorkshire home - more than 250 miles away from Portsmouth - with his son Mark in the passenger seat, and their Peugeot rally car on a trailer. Having left home before 5.00am, they hit busy traffic on the M1 motorway around the Midlands town of Nottingham, at which point a wheel fell off the trailer. Davidson's wife Carole reported: "That sent the van and trailer across all three lanes of motorway and Fred thought he was going to die. Luckily, he managed to bring things to a halt on the hard shoulder and a truck from behind pulled up to see if they were OK. "The driver said that Fred had done a good job to hold onto it and that he couldn't believe that no vehicles had hit him. They were a little shaken when they got home with the trailer and car on the back of a breakdown wagon." The following day Davidson father and son were preparing to set off again for a second attempt, but the ramp snapped as they were putting the car on another trailer; luckily the car was already on the trailer! By the time they arrived in Portsmouth, however, the docks were closed . . . but a helpful security guard took pity on them and arranged for them to leave the car. Carole continued: "We are all looking forward to our return to Barbados, especially to meet all the wonderful people we met last year. Nothing is too much trouble for the Carnival organisers, and we very much appreciate all the hard work that goes into an event like this. The atmosphere of the whole thing is fantastic - Fred said it was the best holiday he had ever had, while our co-driver last year, Graham Willcock, says it just gets better every year." Willcock has taken part in all three years of the Carnival, having been co-driver to Ryan Champion, Andy Elliott and Fred Davidson. For 2004, however, he switches seats, having entered his own Opel Manta GTE with co-driver Nigel Hutchinson, so Fred Davidson's son Mark will co-drive in the Peugeot. For crowd favourite Graeme Finlayson, in the lightweight carbon fibre motorcycle-engined Fluke sports car, the last-minute drama was a mechanical one . . . and he nearly missed the boat completely, arriving at Portsmouth on the morning of loading. Finlayson said: "I took the car for a final shakedown test, as I have a fancy new semi-auto gearbox to get used to, and for a photo-shoot with the new British magazine Track & Race Car. The next thing I know, the flat-shift skips a beat and the engine's revving at 23,000rpm . . . "Needless to say, the effect on the engine was quite interesting, although it was still running, somehow. I tried to take out the spark plugs for a look, but one snapped off, then a valve stem fell out of the manifold from that cylinder . . . and so it went on! Anyway, the car now has a new engine in and - phew! - I just made it to the boat." For his second attempt at Rally Barbados, Finlayson will have some local support, as experienced Bajan navigator Jamal Brathwaite will be his co-driver. The Barbados Rally Carnival will comprise two international motor sport events: over the first weekend - May 22/23 - competitors will tackle the Vaucluse Raceway International RallySprint at the popular facility in the parish of St Thomas; the following weekend - May 29/30 - crews will face 32 special stages island-wide in Rally Barbados. One of only two European drivers to have competed in Rally Carnival every year, Stockdale already has an impressive record of achievement; in 2002, he finished sixth overall, class winner and highest overseas competitor in his white BMW M3, and claimed another class win last year with his new 4-litre V8-powered BMW M3 GTR. Rally Carnival 2003 was the new car's first event, since when extensive work has been done on the car. Like many of his fellow competitors from England, getting the car to the south coast port of Portsmouth in time for shipping to Barbados on the Geest Line was a struggle: "We finished working on the car at half-past three in the morning last Saturday, then set off south to deliver it to the docks," he said. Stockdale has built a big crowd following in Barbados, both on the stages of Rally Barbados (May 29/30), and at the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas, venue for the International RallySprint, which is staged over the first weekend of Rally Carnival (May 22/23). This year, Stockdale has a new team-mate in Hugh Peat, who came to Barbados for the first time last year with his unusual Vauxhall-powered Ford Escort; both cars will run this year in a new livery - silver with red and blue flashes, the colours of specialist adventure golf course builders Plasterland. Sponsor Terry Clough said: "The Carnival is upon us again and we are looking forward to an exciting two weeks in Barbados. Martin has replaced most of the bodywork of his BMW with true M3 body panels now and the car now has a rear-mounted dry sump tank, which has cured last year's problems with oil surge. He has also modified the exhaust system, with a pipe out of each cylinder bank in true V8 style . . . and that should sound a lot better, which will please his fans!" Peat has also worked on the Escort during the year, trying to find some more power; first, he replaced his 16v Astra engine with a Vtec engine (that wouldn't run properly), then a Pinto unit (that wouldn't give any more than 150 bhp) . . . so he's gone back to Vauxhall. With the help of Kevin Procter's ace technician Kevin Franks, he now has a new Astra unit delivering exactly 200bhp. In Peat's own words: "It's very quick!" Stockdale will be joined this year by a new co-driver, Mark Swallow, who stepped in just two weeks ago after Anders Howard found himself unable to make the trip. Peat also has a new co-driver - Craig Perkins - who has been rallying with him since Peat returned home after last year's Rally Carnival. All the cars entered from Europe are currently on their way from England to Barbados, the journey estimated to take around 10 days. They will first be seen at International Scrutineering at McEnearney Quality at Wildey on the evening of Friday, May 21. The Barbados Rally Carnival comprises two international motor sport events: over the first weekend - May 22/23 - competitors will tackle the Vaucluse Raceway International RallySprint at the popular facility in the parish of St Thomas; the following weekend - May 29/30 - crews will face 32 special stages island-wide in Rally Barbados 2004. "Quantity matched with quality", says rally organiser For the second year in a row, Rally Barbados has broken all previous records, with 94 crews on the entry list published today (May 5) by the organising Barbados Rally Club (BRC). And, with four of the five previous winners of the BRC's premier event included in that list, there is quality, as well as quantity. Once again part of the annual Barbados Rally Carnival, the event has attracted 28 cars from Europe and 12 from around the region to face the best of Barbados, promising a tough and competitive event over the last weekend of the month, Saturday/Sunday, May 29/20. Chairman of the Rally Barbados organising committee and competition secretary of the Club Barry Gale said: "We are very pleased with the response to Rally Barbados this year, as we have quantity matched with quality. For a while, it looked as though we might hit our new maximum start number of 100, but there have been a few withdrawals in the past week which have prevented that. "But we have 27 four-wheel-drive cars, more than ever before, including some very interesting cars from Europe, so I am confident that rally fans will not be disappointed by the final list. Like last year, there is a good spread of overseas competitors right through the different groups, so every crew from Barbados will be competing against at least one car from Europe or around the region." Last year's winners Paul Bourne and Louis Venezia (Subaru Impreza WRC) will lead the field away at 9.00am on Saturday, May 29, followed by the on-form Roger Mayers and Max Ferri (Ford Focus WRC). The top 10 seeds also include previous winners Trevor Manning (1999), Roger Skeete - with nine wins, the most successful driver on the event - and Jamaican Jeffrey Panton (1998). Only Ireland's Kenny McKinstry is missing from that roll of honour. Panton heads the strongest entry from Jamaica for some years, with Peter Moodie Jnr and Gary Gregg also allocated top 10 starting slots. Highest-seeded of the European entry is Kevin Procter, who ran strongly last year in his Ford Sapphire Cosworth - he returns with a Ford Escort Cosworth, in which he has already been a winner in the UK this year. The key facts about the entry list for Rally Barbados 2004 are these: + at 94 cars, it is the biggest entry in the 15-year history of the BRC's annual special stage rally + there are 27 four-wheel-drive cars, more than ever before + competitors come from 13 countries, including host nation Barbados, with 76 overseas drivers or co-drivers on the list + 18 manufacturers are represented, with more than 50 different models + numerically, Toyota is the strongest marque, with 21 cars, with Ford (15) and Mitsubishi (12) also in double figures; between them, those manufacturers make up more than half the entry Rally Barbados 2004 is organised by the Barbados Rally Club in association with Automotive Art Shell, Da Costa Mannings Autocentre, Digicel, DMS Distribution.com, McEnearney Quality and Simpson Motors Inc. May 7, 2004 UNUSUAL BRITISH RALLY CARS IN FIRST HEAD TO HEAD Three ways to skin a Cosworth Three of the most unusual one-off hybrid rally cars designed and built in Britain will compete against one another for the first time when they go head-to-head in the fourth Barbados Rally Carnival, to be staged at the end of May. Terry Pankhurst (Peugeot 306 WRC Replica) and Andrew Hurley (Ford Puma Evo) are both returning to the island for a second time, hoping to improve on their results of last year. Each car is the brainchild of its driver - former class-winner in the British Rally Championship Pankhurst chose a 365bhp Cosworth engine and Quaife four-wheel drive for the 'Pug', while Hurley's unique rear-wheel-drive Puma has around 300bhp from its Cosworth power plant. After a group-winning performance in the International RallySprint at the Vaucluse Raceway last year, Pankhurst retired on stage one of Rally Barbados after an accident; having never competed on gravel until the RallySprint, Hurley was on a steep learning curve from the start - he, too, retired from the following weekend's rally with suspension damage after sliding off in the rain. Each has modified his car since last year. Pankhurst, whose partner Amanda Craven will again be his co-driver, said this week: "The front suspension has been up-graded to magnesium uprights, following the failure at last year's RallySprint, and we now have a R & D six-speed gearbox." For Hurley, an engine development engineer at Formula 1 engine-builder Mercedes-Ilmor, last year's experience of rallying on island roads proved a valuable one: "The alternately super slick or bumpy tarmac really picked out the car's shortcomings, that had not been apparent on the higher-grip, smoother surfaces of the UK. I spent a lot of time last summer and this winter improving the suspension (revised geometry, toe, track and camber, new dampers and different tyres), and have had better results in the UK as a consequence." Hurley will also benefit from a little local knowledge this year, as his co-driver will be Barbadian Wayne King, who enjoyed five top 10 finishes on the former Texaco Rally between 1994 and 2000, sitting alongside Roger Hill, first in his Toyota Starlet and later the Celica GT4. And now, there's another unique Cosworth-powered beast on the way, perhaps the most unusual of them all . . . the Ford Fiesta of John Hardman, originally from Northern Ireland, but now based in Wales. Formerly a winning grasstrack, rallycross and rally driver, Hardman is now one of the best-respected rally car and engine preparation wizards in the UK, with a particular passion for Mark II Ford Escorts; he still drives events, however, and must surely enjoy himself when he does - the innocent-looking red Fiesta has Sierra-based four-wheel-drive and, even in Barbados spec, will be pushing 260bhp from its 2.4-litre Cosworth engine, driving through an R & D six-speed dog box. Hardman's co-driver for Rally Barbados 2004 is Jim 'Noddy' Holder, deputy editor of British weekly magazine Autosport. Holder says: "It can run with 400bhp with the supercharger, but we're coming with just 260bhp in the hope of super-reliability in the heat. Touch wood." Rally Barbados 2004 is organised by the Barbados Rally Club in association with Automotive Art Shell, Banks, Da Costa Mannings Autocentre, Digicel, DMS Distribution.com, McEnearney Quality and Simpson Motors Inc. The event is supported by Abacus Builders, The Boatyard, Metal Craft Works, Nassco, Stoute's Car Rental Ltd and Total Sport. Addressing concerns voiced after last year's event, the BRC has made a concerted effort to limit disruption to residents during the Caribbean's biggest annual motor sport event. After a major re-think of the event's structure, organisers are confident that the new-look schedule, confirmed today, will significantly reduce the impact on residents who live along the Rally's route. In addition, the BRC believes the changes introduced for 2004 will enhance the event's appeal to its three key target markets - competitors, spectators and sponsors. Organising committee chairman Barry Gale said: "Through its inclusion in the Barbados Rally Carnival, Rally Barbados has grown in size over the past three years to become the biggest motor sport event in the region. While it now attracts a lot of international interest and brings a major injection of overseas currency into the island each year, it is important that we remember the residents who live along the route, whose daily lives may be affected by the road closure orders. "Some issues were raised by residents along the route last year, and we decided to have a good look at how best to run Rally Barbados 2004. We are confident that the changes we have made will not only halve the inconvenience to local residents, but also provide a better opportunity for sponsors to capitalise on their involvement." While competitors will again contest 32 special stages over the two days - the same number as last year - the schedule has been revised to concentrate the activity at each of the six special stage venues into one day; previously, the northern stages have run on both mornings of the event and those in the east both afternoons. Rally Barbados 2004 will start at 09.00am on Saturday, May 29, from Simpson Motors in Warrens, which will also be the service halt throughout the day; Saturday's route starts will take in the popular stages at Automotive Art Canefield and DMS Distributors.com Sailor Gully in St Thomas before travelling further north to Pickerins in St Lucy. Each stage will run three times during the morning, then in the opposite direction during the afternoon, with the final stage of the day scheduled for 9.00pm. On Sunday, the entire event will move to the east, with the restart from the Six Roads Industrial Park at 7.30am; service will be concentrated here throughout the day. Competitors will tackle the Da Costa Mannings Auto Centre Kendall, Digicel Malvern and Stewarts Hill stages three times during the morning, switching direction for two final runs through each during the afternoon. Once the final stage has been completed, the crews will return to the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas for the Total Sport Super Special; although it will not count toward the results of Rally Barbados 2004, all remaining competitors will be required to complete the Super Special to be classified as finishers. Pace notes on offer to competitors Falling in line with many other international events, Rally Barbados 2004 is making 'pace notes' available for the first time; although these have been prepared primarily for the overseas competitors, local crews will also be able to buy them. Gale said: "Drivers inexperienced with using pace notes may find these very helpful in getting a good system in place, even though they are familiar with the roads already." The notes have been prepared by Bill Sturrick of Scotmaps, who has worked with the Ford, Subaru and Suzuki works rally teams in the UK. In addition to the written pace notes, Sturrick is also selling a video or DVD of the stages, so that those overseas competitors who have not been to Barbados before will be able to get a taste of the event prior to their arrival. Organised by the Vaucluse Raceway Motor Sport Club (VRMSC), the International is the first of two events that make up the annual Barbados Rally Carnival; Total Sport will also be represented the following weekend as sponsor of the Super Special at Vaucluse, which will bring Rally Barbados 2004 to a close. Total Sport is already personal sponsor of rally driver Andrew Jones, whose flamboyant driving style in his rear-wheel-drive Ford Escort MkII has made him a crowd favourite; he will carry the company's colours in both events. The popular sports goods retailer was a co-sponsor of the Dexterity Test at Searle's earlier this year, and also sponsors Barbados Football Division I tournaments and the Run Barbados marathon. Anita Elms, regional marketing manager for Total Sport's parent company, Duty Free Caribbean Holdings, said: "Our sponsorship of Andrew Jones, a driver who is committed more to enjoying driving than to winning, aptly reflects our brand as adventurous yet passionate. Our involvement with the Barbados Rally Carnival is all part of our goal to get our name out there as Barbados' authentic sports apparel store and to connect with fans who are as adventurous and passionate about sports as we are." VRMSC chairman, and founder of the Barbados Rally Carnival, Greg Cozier, said: "I'm delighted to welcome Total Sport as title sponsor of the International RallySprint, particularly as the company is new to major motor sport event sponsorship. Last year's International was the biggest event we had ever put on at Vaucluse, and the entry for this year promises to be of the same high standard . . . both in quality and quantity. I'm sure Total Sport's involvement will help us to raise the game even higher." The Total Sport International RallySprint is the second of four rounds of the 2004 Vaucluse Raceway RallySprint Cup, and also a qualifying round of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Driver's Championship. There were 33 drivers at the opening round in March, and around twice that number look set to be in action for the International. Around half this year's European entry was here last year, and will be keen to do well against the home opposition: British drivers Tom Ryan (Proton Satria), Simon Wallis (Vauxhall Astra), Graeme Finlayson (Fluke WR1C) and Terry Pankhurst (Peugeot 306 WRC Replica) all won their Groups last year, while Austria's Josef Pointinger went one better in his immaculate Ford Escort Mk1 World Cup Rally replica, adding victory in the end-of-day Handicap KnockOut to his Group win. Of the others, Kevin Procter was fastest of the overseas drivers in his thundering Ford Sapphire Cosworth, while newcomer John Hardman - a former grasstrack and rallycross driver - should be able to put his unusual four-wheel-drive Ford Fiesta Cosworth to good use. But the overseas drivers will face strong oppositions from local aces, led by Trevor Manning, who has done his level best to make the Vaucluse Raceway his own over the past four years or so; at the Total Sport International RallySprint, he will be giving his new state-of-the-art Mitsubishi Evo VIII its Vaucluse debut, so will be under pressure to maintain his high standards. In the 15 events run since 2000, 150 drivers have raced at Vaucluse, including 49 from overseas; that number is set to increase once again, when entries are taken for the International at Local Scrutineering this Saturday. The Total Sport International RallySprint is organised by the Vaucluse Raceway Motor Sport Club and sponsored by Total Sport. It will be driven in Barbados by British businessman Steve Perez, who won last year's Armajaro British Historic Rally Championship at the wheel of a Porsche 911. His stable of rally cars also includes an ex-Colin McRae Ford Focus WRC from 2002, in which Perez currently lies third in the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship. His co-driver for Rally Barbados 2004 will be Neil Dashfield. Described as "probably the fastest street-legal way in which two people can be transported from A to B, on tarmac or gravel", this 1984 Audi Sport Quattro is one of only about 20 originally assigned by the factory for competition; its original turbocharged, five-cylinder, 2122cc engine produced 530bhp. The sophisticated specification includes coolers for oil and fuel situated below the huge rear wing and in the boot, while most of the external add-on panels - front, bonnet, boot and rear spoiler - were of Kevlar composite material, for greater lightness and strength. Former World Rally Champion Hannu Mikkola rallied the Quattro in the early months of 1986, winning two of the first three rounds of the British Rally Championship, the Welsh International and the National Breakdown, over demanding forest tracks in Wales and North Yorkshire. Indeed, he was leading the championship comfortably when Audi withdrew from the World Rally Championship following concerns over spectator safety; Audi UK also abandoned its competition programme. Mid-way through the year, however, Mikkola drove the car once more at the famous Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb, at a special event organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the great German driver Hans Stuck's appearance in England in the fiercesome 5.3-litre V16 Auto Union single-seater, With the Quattro repainted silver to reflect German national racing colours, Mikkola clocked a remarkable time of 29.51secs, which remains the record for closed cars on the hill. Since then, this famous Quattro has been correctly repainted in the distinctive Audi Sport livery as driven by Mikkola and co-driver Arne Hertz in Wales and Yorkshire. It has been exhibited regularly at major events and driven by a second World Champion - Ari Vatanen - for a Group B group test article in Top Gear magazine. The current owner first drove the car in public on a demonstration rally stage at an historic exhibition in Warwickshire in February. Rally Barbados 2004 is organised by the Barbados Rally Club in association with Automotive Art Shell, Banks, DaCosta Mannings Autocentre, Digicel, DMS Distribution.com, McEnearney Quality and Simpson Motors Inc.
