92 – Aug 93: Yield Mgt Research Manager, reporting to GM Marketing Systems Recalled to a revenue management role in BA’s tactical marketing field
to lead a team of 15 operational research (OR) analysts charged with designing
the next generation COBRA (Capacity Optimisation Brings Revenue Advantage)
system for BA. This new revenue management system was to forecast passenger
demand and optimise the allocation of seats to fare subclasses as before but on
a network wide basis rather than on a flight by flight basis as was previously
the case. Led the development of origin and destination control solutions at BA
and the development of the conceptual design study for the new COBRA system
while continuing to provide ongoing OR support and training for BA’s existing
revenue management department.
Oct
90 – Apr 92: Senior IT Education Consultant, reporting to GM Information
Management Strategy Responsible for internal business consulting on a wide range of
strategic information management (IM) issues, including IM three-year plan, IM
planning / project portfolio prioritisation, IM infrastructure and architecture
standards, IM “reorientation” programme (restructuring IM Department to make
it more business focussed), and IM’s communication and education programmes
(including helping to develop and deliver “Catalyst” a range of internal IM
courses and seminars for both IM management and end user management). During
this period he was also seconded to the finance department for a six month
period to lead a team of six finance managers conducting an Activity Value
Analysis (AVA) for BA’s Management Accounting department – part of an
airline-wide AVA which resulted in saving the company over £100M pa in cost
reductions and 4,500 people (nearly 10% of the workforce) in staff reductions.
Louis also graduated from BA’s Senior Management Academy with an MBA.
Jan
89 – Oct 90: Senior Manager Artificial Intelligence, reporting to GM
Operational Research Promoted to senior manager grade. Responsible for the development and
implementation of 24 expert systems while leading a team of 4 project managers
and 15 knowledge engineers. Most application areas continued to be in the
tactical marketing / revenue management field, though operations control and
finance systems were also developed. Continued to deliver internal IT training
courses on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Was selected for BA’s
Senior Management Academy (company sponsored, 3 year, part-time MBA programme).
Sep
87 – Jan 89: Project Manager Marketing Tactics, reporting to Snr Mgr Marketing
Decision Support
Appointed by BA to develop BA’s own in-house AI expertise through developing
and delivering an internal IT training programme on the subject. Also given
responsibility for tactical marketing decision support projects – an area
where the application of AI techniques was thought to have potential. Led a team
of 10 operational research analysts / knowledge engineers providing management
science support for a variety of tactical marketing functions – principally
yield management and tactical pricing. This involved a mixture of taking over
already established projects and initiating new ones. Most significantly, this
work entailed a major contribution to the initial design of BA’s COBRA project
which got Louis started in the field of airline Revenue Management.
