The castle was built to enforce the Norman rule of the city. The original castle gradually fell into disrepair after many centuries of Royal patronage.

Nottingham Castle - 14th CenturyThe castle prior to the Civil War

On August 2nd 1642, King Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham Castle and started the English Civil War. After Charles' defeat the remains of the castle were demolished.

The Duke of Newcastle later purchased the land. Today's ducal palace was built on the site of the original castle, using - in part - the stones of the original castle.

In the 1830s some of Nottingham's citizens stormed the Ducal Palace in protest at the Duke's voting against a parliamentary reform bill. The Palace was set ablaze.

Castle ablaze

The Castle was left as a burnt out shell for many years, until the Duke leased it to Nottingham corporation for 500 years in the late 19th century. The Corporation rebuilt the castle and turned it into a museum open to the public.
