Exciting coincidence - I was wasting time while waiting for something else to download and searched on 'Alton, Staffs'. I found a new private site under construction with a couple of photos. I wrote to the owner because there was a picture of his parents on the page and they looked similar age to my parents. I gave him a few family details and although his parents do not originate from Alton, their house deeds show George Hammersley, my grandad, as a previous owner. They live in The Mount, the house where my mother was born.
I am now also in contact with the current owner of the house where I was born in Stafford road in Uttoxeter
These are details from the 1891 Census Return for household of my Great Great Uncle BENNETT HAMMERSLEY who lived at Town Head, Alton, Staffs.
See also previous1881 Census Return for Hannah & William which shows Bennett as 36 and resident at 37 Alton Village.
Bennett, born at Alton, was a 47 year old General Labourer with his 27 year old wife Mary who was also born at Alton.
With them were their 2 sons Bennett age 6 and John Henry age 2, both born at Alton.
