Went to breakfast . when we came back we could not see the barque. Went down a little further. Found her. Got beef, cabbages, turnips, onions, haddock etc on board, Tugged down to Gravesend by express. Lay there till Monday afternoon.

Sunday 25th January
Read a little. Had usual meals. Fresh bread for breakfast, dinner and tea. Food very well now. Two missionaries came on board and we had a sermon and prayers.

Monday 26th January
Tugged down (after the Captain came on board) to Downs. Dropped anchor. Pilot ashore. Very little wind. Picked watches. I am in the Mates. Set anchor. Watch turned in. Tug alongside in the afternoon. Bent on the tow cable good and away we went down the Thames. Passed the old training ships THE CHICHESTER and ARETHUSA.

Tuesday 27th January
Got the anchor up to the shanty 'Outward Bound'. Great many shore boats with soft tack. Red herrings, spiced bread etc. came off to us. Going very slow. Hardly any wind. Passed South Foreland. Two fine electric lights not lit now as it is light.

Wednesday 28th January
Same stile as yesterday. Find the night watches rather cold. Not very pleasant to turn out just as you get to sleep. Off Portsmouth, Can't see land. See the lights now it is dark.

Thursday 29th January
Scarcely any wind. Making very little way.Wind increasing. Been rather bilious last two or three days.

Friday 30th January
Took seasick 5 o'clock Friday morning. Felt alright while on deck. Soon as I went below and turned in I began to feel rather unwell from that queer sort of up and down motion whilst lying in my bunk (shelf on which to sleep). Seasick all day. Feel very giddy etc. I have one of the thwartship bunks allotted to me so we had bad weather when the vessel rolls heavy. I was standing on my head one minute and on my feet the next. Very pleasnt way of being rocked to sleep.

Saturday 31st January
No better. Can't throw anything up as I took nothing down,

(Insert little pictures he drew of himself in his bunk)
