The Festival of Renewal ran from the Thursday afternoon to the Monday afternoon. With our usual planning and co-ordination members of the unit were still arriving late on the Friday night, after potential employers were starting to get impatient. Somehow we managed to achieve a moderately impressive turnout of nine for the event (impressive to us as we didn't expect that many to make it or even find the location deep in Jhereg lands).
Amazingly the first thing that happened to us was we found some more old members of the Lion Azure, by the simple method of camping next to them. They'd been together for a couple of years already and were on contract for the festival, but there were hopes we could join together in the future.
In style and variety we more resembled an adventuring party than anything else so we acted as a light infantry unit for battle purposes. Our only battles as a unit were on the Sunday afternoon where we fought alongside the Vipers, Lions & Jhereg against the Greenskin hordes. First we ambushed a heavy Greenskin column that was marching to attack us then we attacked the column of lighter troops that was following, it appears the Greenskins need to keep their various races separated. During the ambush we were on the extreme right flank with a Viper archer unit that was even smaller than us and somehow managed to hold out against far heavier forces than were expected until the Evil Sunz came to take the pressure off, our healers were kept very busy. During the battle that followed the visibility of the Lion Azure banner lead to us becoming the hinge point on the huge battle line for a large scale swing and flank maneuver. Members of the company also fought in many of the other battles, fighting alongside friends made over the course of the festival.
The rest of the time we were busy with 'non-combatant' roles which mainly seemed to involve meeting people, drinking, getting reacquainted with old friends, making new friends and drinking a lot. Finn and Storm (winged faerie and elf respectively) even took part in the Fir Cruthen comedy ritual on the Sunday night. The Lion Azure are definitely not the best choice if you're looking for mercenaries to abuse as gate guards. On the Sunday we saw what happens when a mercenary group upsets a faction as the Nomads with support from the Wolves completely destroyed the Bladedancers in a well executed surprise attack on the Bladedancers' camp.
Overall it went exceptionally well, especially considering how many of us were newbies to the universe. Many new friends were made and many drinks drunk. Unfortunately we did lose one member of the company during the weekend - Jay fell honourably in battle fighting alongside the Wolves.
Thanks to the help a few of the company gave to the Fir Cruthen we were given a contract to winter out with them at Morgan's castle, giving us somewhere to rest and train till the 1102 campaign season starts though it has turned out to involve a little more action than expected as we volunteered to help with the Fir Cruthen battles to free Glasgi.
Renewal 1101 wasn't the last they'll see of the Lion Azure. In fact the way the off-season recruiting is going the company could more than double in size for 1102.
Apologies for the shortage of piccies - After we went live I managed to forget I had the camera with me until it was almost too late.
