St. James's Park, is the oldest football
stadium in the region. It first staged an organized game of
football in 1880.
The ground was the only a piece of rough grazing land, part
of the city's Town Moor. And since the Victorian years, the
stadium has been more and more developed.
In 1905, there was a major redevelopment of SJP and transformed
the 30,000 ground capacity so it can hold up more than 70,000
spectators, to match the club status as a division one team.
When the sixties finally arrived, the stadium ground was out-of-date,
and failed to become one of stadium of Englands hosts during
the 1966 World Cup.
St James Park now has a capacity of around 52,000 people and
never fails to be a sell out for every premiership
game.
