Woodgate joined Newcastle in a £9 million move from debt-ridden
Leeds United on the final day of the January transfer window
in 2003. He started his career at Leeds as a midfielder but
soon found that the centre of defence was his most suited position.
After debuting against Chelsea with an oustanding performance
Woodgate has been a tower of strength in Newcastle's defence
and can expect many call ups to his country in the future.
After signing a 5-year contract with Newcastle, Woodgate said:
"I can't wait to pull on the famous black and white shirt
and make St James' Park my new home."
