The fast flowing, attacking football that we have been used to seeing over the past few years at St James' returned in a 5-0 trouncing over dutch opposition NAC Breda.

Newcastle nearly had their first goal on the clock on 2 minutes, when Breda keeper Babos just managed to clear under pressure from newly positioned right-midfielder Kieron Dyer.

Shearer's header from a Robert free-kick seen Schenning slice his shot close to his goal and his own goalkeeper was forceOn 16 minutes Robert, who at the centre of most of United's early attacks, was fouled out on the left, but when he swung the ball in it was half cleared and Bernard could not find the target from the edge of the box.

Breda centre forward Elamander then tried his luck with a half volley from an angle that flew well wide, then Shearer's header from Robert's free kick saw Schenning divert the ball dangerously close to his own goal and his goalkeeper was forced to tip it over his bar for a corner.

The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes, when Alan Shearer flicked the ball forward for Bellamy to run onto, who then chipped the ball over the keeper and get his first goal of the campaign..

Bellamy's 2nd goal wasn't then far away either, when 6 minutes later, after a crunching tackle from defender Titus Bramble in his own half, seen Newcastle play beautiful one touch football that were used to seeing. The ball finally came out to Robert on the left wing, who squared it to Craig Bellamy to tap into an empty net.

Breda had a great chance to get back into the game five minutes before the break when Penders threaded a pass through to Elmander, but Given spread himself well and made the block.

Bellamy nearly made his 2 goals a hat-trick just after the break, when Breda failed to clear the ball effectively. Bellamy seen the mistake and lobbed keeper Babos, but unfortunately for Bellamy, it came back off the bar and Breda eventually managed to get it away to safety.

The 58 minute mark seen Newcastle go further infront, and it was Titus Bramble who was on the end of a Laurent Robert cross that the Breda keeper had no chance with and Bramble to get his first goal of his Newcastle career.

Shearer missed a sitter on 71 minutes, when Laurent Robert squared the ball across the face of the goal, but Shearer was unfortunately unable to keep his shot down, and seen his shot go high over the bar.

Shearer did manage a goal 6 minutes later from a free-kick. Robert rolled the ball to Shearer. The Breda wall stayed still and didnt close Shearer down, giving him enough time to take a touch and smash it home from 25 yards to make it 4-0.

Darren Ambrose then replaced Dyer on 70 minutes, and it took Ambrose 19 minutes to grab his first goal for Newcastle, with a free-header in the 6-yard box to make it 5-0 on the night.

Sir Bobby said:

"I said to our players, `You've got to think that you're not playing Breda, you've got to think that you're playing Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, that's the level you've got to think you're playing against.`

"Now, whether Breda are going to be like that, I don't know, I don't care, you've got to think it's a difficult game and you've got to be full of running and have a winning appetite. The mood of the team has got to be outstanding'.

"And we went for it and we gave Breda a very difficult game. I didn't think for a moment we'd win by five - I thought we could win by two, something like that. I know the quality of our team."

"It was obviously a very important win and we were back to something like our best that you saw many times last season.

"I always felt we had the ability to do that. It was always a question of time, patience and support and we'd be okay. It was important that we finally won in front of our home public, and to score goals.

"But the important thing in the first half, for me, was Shay Given, who made two wonderful saves. At half-time, we went in 2-0 and it could have been 2-2.

"Shay made two very, very good saves, but in the second half, obviously, we subdued them, submerged them really, and then when the third goal went in, it was very difficult for them.

"They kept chugging away, but with respect to them, we probably had too much on the pitch for them overall. They had some good players, but it was a difficult night for them.

"We've all been under pressure. We needed to win and we needed to win well, and we've done it. It can only do us a power of good."

"It's not over because we have to go over there and play, so it can't be. But it would be a catastrophe if we lost 6-0."
