Newcastle twice let a 1-goal lead slip in a game that will be remembered for the number of yellow cards given out by card happy Rob Styles.

The first incident came in the first few minutes, when ex-mackem Kevin Kilbane fell in the box from a challenge by Andy O'Brien which was waved away.

Wayne Rooney made his first introduction to the game, when he broke down the wing, with a good challenge from left-back Olivier Bernard put it out for a corner. Everton defender Joseph Yobo, who was sent off in the game against Newcastle in the 1-1 draw at St James last season, forced Shay Given into a save to his bottom left.

The first yellow card Newcastle recieved arrived on the 23rd minute mark, when Laurent Robert made his way into the referee's notebook.

The 32nd minute seen Newcastle given a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard box, with Alan Shearer hitting a low drive which Richard Wright saved.

Laurent Robert then recieved his second yellow card, and a following red, after jumping into Everton forward Linderoth.

Minutes later Olivier Bernard then recieved a yellow card, for his challenge on ex-Newcastle defender Steve Watson.

Griffin then followed Bernard and Robert into Styles' notebook on 44 minutes.

Everton started brightly from the second half whistle, with Radzinski making a sprint down the wing, leaving O'Brien in his wake. Radzinksi then only had to round Given, but he pulled off a magnificent save to deny Radzinski the opening goal of the game.

Newcastle then scored the opening goal of the game, with Alan Shearer chipping a ball over the top, with Kieron Dyer running onto it. Dyer was one-on-one with Nigel Martyn, who had came on for an injured Richard Wright during the first half. Naysmith pulled down Dyer in the box, giving Rob Styles another chance to get his cards out, and send off Gary Naysmith. Shearer took the resulting penalty, smashing it into Nigel Martyn's net for 1-0 on 59 minutes.

The lead didn't last long, with Everton coming back from a goal down in the 67th minute, when Newcastle failed to clear a ball that fell into Tomasz Radzinski's path for him to hit bottom left into Shay Given's net.

Olivier Bernard found space to run at the Everton defence. He made his way into the box only to be taken down by Joseph Yobo for a second Newcastle penalty. Shearer stepped up once more, and smashed the ball to Nigel Martyn's right at a blistering speed to take Newcastle into a second, one-goal lead.

Bellamy was then booked for being unable to keep his gob zipped and made his way into Rob Style's notebook as well.

In the 87th minute Tomasz Radzinski ran down the left with Jermaine Jenas running at him to try to gain possesion back for Newcastle. The Everton striker made it into the area and fell under the challenge of Jermaine Jenas to give Everton an 87th minute penalty. He then recieved a yellow card to go along with Bernard, Griffin, Bellamy and Laurent Robert.

Another ex-Newcastle player, Duncan Ferguson, who had came on in the 63rd minute for another ex-Newcastle player Steve Watson stepped up to take the penalty. Ferguson smashed the ball into Given's net to make the game 2-2 on the day, to the dissapointment of Newcastle, who would of put their first win of the season onto the board.

Sir Bobby said:

[ On Shearer's penalties ]

"Alan was the man of the moment, you need to be ice cool in a situation like that. He had two penalties in a cauldron and scored them both with great calmness.

"Considering they were his first penalties since his miss in the shoot-out against Partizan Belgrade which cost us so much, underlines how good he is in such situations."

[ On the performance ]

"We were rugged, showed spirit and everyone worked hard."

[ On card-happy Rob Styles ]

"It is the referee's prerogative to do what he did, but all those bookings gives a false image because it was not a violent match.

[ On Robert's red card ]

"It was nothing malicious, he jumped in and the lad turned his back. But the power of the people in the stands made him give what he did."
