Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw as Bolton managed to leave St James with a point in their pocket.

Newcastle started the brightest and a first win of the season looked hopeful when a free-kick on the left was awarded for us. Laurent Robert swung in the corner with his left foot, with Gary Speed getting his head onto the ball but unfortunately it hit the crossbar and going over.

The 9th minute seen Youri Djorkaeff hit the Newcastle's side netting after a cross from the left.

Griffin was urged from the crowd to shoot from 30 yards, but Bolton goalkeeper Jaaskelainen managed to get behind the strike and comfortably gather it. then Given had to make a good save to keep out Okocha's curling free kick from 20 yards.

Shay Given was then called into duty, when a Jay Jay Okocha free-kick from 20 yards was on target, but was, fortunately, not good enough to make the opening goal of the game.

In the 39th minute, Alan Shearer got the better of ex-Sunderland defender Emerson Thome after a ball was played over the top by Jonothan Woodgate. Shearer outpaced Thome, and was one-on-one with goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen 20 yards about. Bruno N'Gotty managed to get back and poke the ball out of Alan Shearer's shooting foot away into the corner where Bolton managed to prevent a corner.

Just after the restart, Shearer was on the end of a Laurent Robert cross, but he could not keep his effort down and the ball went over the crossbar to the dissapointment of the sold-out crowd.

Titus Bramble was unlucky not to get his first goal for the club, when he unleashed a powerful header against the crossbar from Laurent Robert, who seemed to be the only source of a potential goal on Saturday afternoon. Woodgate wasnt far off from he ball on the rebound as Jaaskelainen gathered and another Newcastle attack came to nothing.

Bolton were unable to manage any meaningful and promosing attacks to Newcastle's goal, and preferred to shoot from 30 yards out for most of the second half, to which Shay Given got behind on all of the shots and didnt really cause a problem.

Ivan Campo managed to make a nuisance of himself all game, when his "injuries" forced him to sit down 5 minutes at a time on the pitch and recieve treatment, thus holding up play. Amazingly, Bolton's physio managed to work wonders each time, with Campo managing to jog back onto the pitch after being sent to the side 10 seconds after the play had resumed each time.

Kieron Dyer then recieved a yellow for showing his frustration as a decision went against Newcastle.

Ameobi sent in a low cross to Dyer 5 minutes from full-time, but Charlton stuck out a boot to concede the corner, to which nothing came of it.

Three minutes of time added on were shown by the fourth official Jeff Winter, despite all of the "injuries" in the second half, 95% of which were from Ivan Campo. A Laurent Robert shot went wide, and an Ameobi header which trailed wide was all Newcastle could add in the final minutes as a late winner was tried for, but was unsucessful.

Sir Bobby said:

It will turn, we need a bit of luck,"

"The players are disappointed because we've dropped two points, and we know that.

"We did the same last week. We've had two draws now where we could have won both games. We could have won last week at Everton because we were winning 2-1 with two minutes to go.

"We were always looking to win it here today - they'll be highly delighted with a point because that's what they came for and they've got it.

"They had a certain game plan and I suppose they nullified us, but they had that luck that our two headers hit the bar, they had the luck that our other little chances just didn't go in."

"Every single player we put out in the team gave absolutely 100%. I have no crib about that at all. We need a bit of luck and we didn't quite get it today.

"If Gary Speed's header within the first five minutes goes in, we might get off to a rip-roaring start.

"We wanted to win it and they came defensively to get a point and therefore, I suppose, succeeded because they've got a point."
