Below are the questions and answers for the new show me / Tell me part of the practical test. You will be asked two questions on routine vehicle maintenance, one will require just an explanation and the other may involve lifting the bonnet and identifying certain fluid containers and telling the examiner how you would check the levels.
I will give you a lesson which will cover all of the above and more !! It is essential that all drivers are aware of their responsibilities when it comes to routine maintenance.

THE QUESTIONS
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick then explain how to remove the dipstick, clean it with a cloth put it back in, remove it again and check the level is between the min/max markings.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Identify high/low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Identify reservoir and explain how to check level.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Operate the hazard warning switch and walk around the vehicle to check the bulbs are working.
Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Operate brake pedal, the examiner can help by checking if they are working you can also make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc
Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working.
Explain you would turn the lights on and then walk around the vehicle to check they are working.
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Demonstrate by applying parking brake that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel.
Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
Operate the horn to show it is working.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
Adjust the level of the head restraint so that the centre is level with your ears
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.
Use the wiper stalk by pulling forward to wash the front and pushing backwards to wash the rear.
Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
To clear the front window set the airflow control to front window screen and press air-con button and press rear window defogger to clear the rear window.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.
Turn on the dipped headlights then turn the fog light switch one click, this will operate just the rear fog light. Fog light only used if the visibility is less than 100m
Show me how you would switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know that main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Turn on the dipped headlights first then push the stalk forward and explain the main beam (coloured blue) has illuminated on the driver display.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
The anti-lock braking system light (orange in colour) would be illuminated on the driver display if there was a problem with the system.
Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Check the gear is in neutral, start the engine and explain while turning the steering wheel (slightly) that the steering should be light and easy to turn if working and will feel difficult to turn if not working properly.
