STORIES FROM ASHANTI
The links below are to seven short stories set in Ashanti at
about the
time of independence of Ghana (1950s). The document "Background to
Ashanti" illustrates
some features of village life at that time.
There have been considerable changes in society since those days.
The stories were written by Joe Latham.
They are based on ideas
in the ballads sung in Twi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana,
West Africa by
Koo Nimo
The co-operation of Koo Nimo in refining these stories is
acknowledged and
appreciated.
Four of the stories and the Background to Ashanti were
translated into French
by Michèle Heyvaert, Maubeuge, France. Helpful comments
on these
translations have been made by Dr. Owusu-Sarpong of the
Department of French,
University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
