Notts RR, Retford Race 4 - 14th July 1999
The Notts Summer
Road Racing League moved to Retford for the fourth event of the series but
despite the distance to the course a full turn out of Redhill runners ensured
that the club would be in for another successful evening. Unfortunately there
was one absentee, Andy Tarry the club's and county's leading runner who, was
suffering with a slight injury from the sidelines, which made the race wide
open.
The hot evening ensured a steady start and it wasn?t until the second mile that
a group of seven runners, including four from Redhill, broke clear. Alan
Smith was making the pace and eased away from the group, followed by Alaster
Stewart, at around the half way point. The gap to the chasing group remained at
around 50 metres until Andy Weatherill and then Eamonn Hyland joined the leading
two ensuring that the Redhill spectators were treated to the sight of four
Redhill runners running side-by-side at the head of the race passing the four
mile marker.
Andy, in hard training for the Veterans World Championships Marathon in August,
made a concerted effort in the final mile to break clear and took Alaster with
him. The two battled it out for the whole of the final mile with Alaster content
to sit and wait. Entering the final 400 metres, Andy made another effort and
momentarily broke clear but rounding the final bend, Alaster [produced a
startling turn of pace, reminiscent of the days of old when Coe or Ovett would
effortlessly destroy their opponents by moving into a higher
gear]..............(only a joke Steve, you can replace that bit with the
following) used his track speed to sprint clear by 2 seconds. Andy who pushed
Alaster all the way in the finishing straight finished a fine second and must
surely have a good chance of a high finish in the World Championships. Alan came
in around 80 metres behind, just shaking off Eamonn, who himself is in hard
training for the Robin Hood Marathon in September, to complete a clean sweep of
the top four places for Redhill.
Other good runs from Redhill members ensured that the club won the Senior mens
race and consolidate their position at the top of the league. The male Veterans
are involved in a tight battle for the overall league title with Mansfield but a
full turnout from one of the country's top Veterans teams should secure the win
they deserve. The top three places in the individual rankings also belong to
Redhill with Andy strengthening his place at the top over Alan with Alaster
moving quietly up into third.
Ann Ford, Helen Burrell and Helen Cawthorne also made a successful and winning
day out for the excellent Redhill ladies team.
It was also a
pleasure to see Steve Humber racing again after a couple of months out with a
serious back problem. The former Great Britain short track speedskater was a
little disappointed with his run but it was a solid performance and the signs
are there in training that he will soon be back to the form he was showing when
he won the County 1,500m championship in May.
The league is concluded in a months time in Sutton in Ashfield when the club
hope to win all the team titles, repeating their success of 1997.
