An East Cleveland choir has been presented with a
national RNLI award in recognition of decades of fundraising for the
lifeboat charity.
Three founder members of the Marske
Fishermen’s Choir – current leader Bill Porritt,
Duncan Vickers MBE and Peter Russell - travelled to the Barbican in
London yesterday (Thursday 18 May) with other members of the choir and
their partners to receive the award from Princess Alexandra at the
RNLI’s Annual Presentation of Awards.
The choir was nominated for the RNLI’s
annual Group Supporter Award by RNLI Senior Fundraising Manager Val
Nixon, who said the choir has raised thousands of pounds for the RNLI.
She added: ‘They have performed at lifeboat
naming ceremonies and other special occasions, including the RNLI 175th
Anniversary Service of Thanksgiving at York Minster. They are a joy to
hear and a tremendously enthusiastic group of supporters. The
lads never say no and as a result of their wholehearted dedication and
support, many thousands of pounds have been raised for the
RNLI.’
Marske Fishermen’s Choir was formed in 1968
by fishermen in the East Cleveland village and since then has gone from
strength to strength, performing all over the country and supporting
several charities with its fundraising.
Choir secretary Bas Christie said everyone was
delighted to be receiving the RNLI award.
He said: ‘It was a great surprise and all
members of the choir are extremely honoured. In fact, we felt quite
humble to be receiving an award on the same stage as some of the
RNLI’s volunteer lifeboatmen, who were presented with bravery
awards yesterday for some very courageous rescues. In comparison, what
we have done seems very small.’
Instead of claiming expenses from the RNLI for the
trip to London, the choir raised sponsorship to cover the cost of the
trip. They received donations of £150 from Huntsman and
Howden’s Joinery Company in Stockton; £300 from
Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council; £50 from
former Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Council, Madge Moses, and
£200 from Mrs May Stubley, the mother of former choir member
Grenville Stubley who died recently.
Mr Christie added: ‘We are extremely
grateful to all our sponsors, whose generosity has meant we have not
had to request funding from the RNLI. We were especially pleased and
surprised to receive the money from Mrs Stubley in memory of Grenville,
who was in the choir for 25 years and is very sadly missed by us
all.’
