KingJohns Guide Merging Mpeg1

Hi another basic guide, a lot of people are still asking how they can merge Mpeg 1 files they have made, this guide shows the most commonly used method, and with a program that's easy to use.

See also KingJohns Guide Splitting Mpeg1

The files that you want to merge should have the same characteristics, no good trying to merge different types of files, preferably the files should also have been made by TMPGEnc. This guide shows the merging of 2 mpeg 1 files.

TMPGEnc
File > Mpeg Tools > Merge&Cut
If you are working with previously made Mpeg 1 files for VCD, select
MPEG-1 Video-CD from the drop down list.

Click The Add button and select the files you wish to add, do this one at a time, or all at once. If you select several at a time, then you can re-arrange the order by picking them up and moving them into the correct order. The picture below shows I have selected 2 files, and have picked up Part1.mpg to move it above Part2.mpg

You need to try and join the files so that when played back the join wont be seen. If both files have been made with TMPGEnc or have previously been split with this program, the join should not be noticeable (Unless your looking for it) .

Select Part1.mpg from the list and click Edit

Make sure you are at the start and click the { button to mark this as the start

Now move the slider bar to the end

Now take a good look to see what the last frame is showing, you may need to move back from the end before you mark it, Remember what that frame looks like.

Click OK

These two buttons can be used to move the frames a little at a time. Carefully click them back or forward to move your frames. Now Highlight Part2.mpg in the list and click the edit button again

Take a good look at this frame, is it the next frame that continues from the last, or do you need to go forward a little, go back to Part1.mpg now and mark it to where you think the frames should end.

Click the } button to mark part1.mpg end

Now Highlight Part2.mpg once more and click the Edit button

Go Back and forth several times, until part 1 has finished at the right frame, and Part2.mpg starts at the right frame. Usually people add a few frames to the end/start so that they overlap, you should see a little of Part1.mpg at the start of Part2.mpg .

Now mark the start of Part2.mpg . Since in this example I am only merging two files, I can now go to the end of part2.mpg and mark it at the end. If your using 3 parts then do this again with Part2.mpg and Part3.mpg

Click OK to continue

Finally click the Browse button to set the location, and type the name of your output file, then Click Run

In A little while TMPGEnc will start to work on the files
First the Video Stream

Then the audio Stream

Then Finally Multiplexing them together

It should be noted that TMPGEnc is NOT a frame editor, it wont insert any frames and will cut to the nearest Group of pictures (GOP) so when you mark the start and end, don't be surprised to see the number move slightly. During play back, unless your looking for it, you probably not notice the join.

Quote:
Q. There is gap between Audio and video when I cut/merge at MPEG tools.
TMPGEnc's MPEG tools officially supports MPEG files which were encoded by TMPGEnc.
If the MPEG file is encoded by other software or captured from a device, there might be gap between audio and video. Or, there might be dropped frame(s) which is made up when playback. If this is the case, MPEG tools does not make up such dropped frame(s), thus there will be gap.
If a gap is constant at any point of movie, it can be adjusted, however if gap is gradually increasing, it is very difficult to fix

This method is used a lot, however if you want more accurate results, you will need to purchase something like Premier or Media Studio . But I am sure you will be more than happy to use this Free program.
