Glasgow A Brief History On May 2nd 1966 Glasgow Airport opened for the First commercial flight , A Vickers Viscount of BEA from Edinburgh, On June27th The airport was official opened by Her Majesty The Queen, Glasgow airports History dates back to 1932 when a airfield was constructed as a overspill for Renfrew airport ,which was operated as a commercial airport alongside the RAF at this time Glasgow was called Abbotsinch airfield, in 1960 plans were drawn up for the development of Abbotsinch ,as The Old Renfrew airport could no longer handle the newest types of aircraft .Between 1932 and 1963 Abbotsinch had been become the home to A RAF Fighter Squadron being transferred to the Fleet Air who renamed Abbotsinch to HMS Sanderling, which closed in 1963 In 1975 BAA to control of Glasgow Airport from Glasgow Corporation, In 1990 The government decided to end the monopoly that was held by Prestwick airport on International flights and Trans Atlantic flight started from Glasgow in May of that Year Today Glasgow serves as Scotland's Gateway to North American, Middle East and India and with other major carriers looking at Glasgow the future looks quite rosy In June 2004 a milestone was passed as 1 million passenger passed through the airport in a single month |
