He was born at 7.10 on 19th Nov. 1931. Weight 7 3/4 lbs.

In 1935 he accompanied his parents and his brother to Australia, travelling from Glasgow, via the Suez Canal, in the Adelaide Steamship Company vessel MV Manoora. They subsequently visited New Zealand, returning to the UK, via the Panama Canal , in November-December, 1935 in the MV Rangitiki. On this trip he crossed the date line on his 4th birthday, having birthdays on two consecutive days.
In 1940 he was evacuated for two terms with the Hall School to Claydon Manor in Buckinghamshire and in 1941/42 went to Morrisons Academy, in Crieff, Perthshire, for about 18 months, before returning to the Hall School in Hampstead.
In 1945, at the age of 13, he went to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, as a Cadet in the Royal Navy. Subsequently, as a Naval Officer, he travelled all over the world in various ships. In 1956 he took part in the Cyrprus patrol and later t he Suez landings, for which he was awarded the Naval General Service Medal. He qualified as a Torpedo Anti-Submarine specialist in 1958. In 1961 he was involved in the search for the Portuguese oceanliner, Santa Maria, which was hijacked off C uracoa. During that commission he also helped to open up a hurricane mooring for yachts in the British Virgin Islands and helped to lay moorings for yachts in English Harbour, Antigua.
In 1962/63 he spent 18 months in the Persian Gulf and, on completion, drove back to England through Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Austria, Germany and France visiting, among other places, Persepolis, Isfahan and the Caspian Sea in Iran, a total d istance of some 7500 miles. This was just before the Iranian revolution and the fall of the Shah.
He attended the Royal Naval Staff College in 1964, during which time he married his wife, Diana Lee. She was a first cousin of his brother's wife, Angela Shirley Creswick. In 1967/69 he spent 2 years on the staff of the Flag Officer Aircraf t Carriers, a period which included operations off Aden during the withdrawal of British forces from that country, the 'Six Day War' and Strike Fleet exercises in the Atlantic. This was followed by an appointment in the Defence Intelligence St aff at the Ministry of Defence in London.
With the cut backs in the Navy, he retired early as a Lieutenant-Commander, in 1971, and qualified as a Chartered Secretary.
Subsequently he worked for Wiggins Teape Limited, which later became Arjo Wiggins Appleton p.l.c., an international paper company, until he retired in 1994.
In his youth he was a fencer and in 1959/60 he won the British Junior Epee Championship, was the Royal Navy epee champion and fenced for England in the Quadrangular Match betwen England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland . He also shot .22 for the R oyal Navy and .303 at Bisley for London County.
He now enjoys skiing and gardening. He also sings tenor with the Dever Singers.
He became an external name at Lloyds of London in 1978 and in 1980 became a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers, like his father.
As a child he lived in Glenmore Road, Belsize Park, London, NW3 until 1936, when the family moved to 12 Perceval Avenue, London, NW3, shortly after their visit to Australia. After his marriage he lived in Blackheath and Droxford, Hampshire, be tween 1964 and 1976, when the family moved to Holly House, Micheldever, Hampshire. He moved to Elm Trees, Hawthorn Close, Micheldever in January, 2003.
He served on the Micheldever Parish Council for eight years, including three years as Chairman, and was also a Governor of the Micheldever Primary School for 14 years . He was a director of Wiggins Teape Pensions Limited from November 1994 - J uly 2002, the trustee company for the Wiggins Teape Pension Scheme, which had some £400 million of assets.
