FAQs

What are the aims of WhyZone?

The site has been established to provide help and support for students and teachers in secondary and further education but others may also find the site content useful.

For students we aim to provide a wide range of support whether they are working from home or school/college, and not just in relation to their academic studies. We include for instance content related to personal development in our Careers and PSHE Learning Zones.

For teachers we aim to provide help and support by:

  • providing ready access to teaching and learning materials (for use in the classroom or homework assignments);
  • providing ready access to the most useful of the vast array of educational resources on the web.

For the educational community we aim to provide an opportunity for fellow professionals to pool and share their ideas and resources.

WhyZone is a web portal i.e. providing lots of links to other web sites. Too many teachers spend too much time reinventing the wheel! If you need wheels then hopefully they are available through WhyZone!

Ken Edwards (WhyZone Founder) uses much of the site to support his classroom teaching on a daily basis as well as to facilitate independent research by his students, whether at school or at home.

Who is the founder of WhyZone?

The site was founded by Ken Edwards, who has been a teacher of Business and Accounting in schools and colleges in the North West of England for more than ten years, and until recently was also Head of Life Skills (PSHE and Careers) in a secondary school in the North West. Ken is also an Assistant Examiner for A Level Accounting on behalf of one of the UK's examination boards.

Before becoming a teacher Ken gained extensive commercial experience in the finance and food retail industries, working for local and international companies, in a range of roles including general and marketing management. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (Institute of Financial Services).

He is now seeking others to join him and his company, Wynchcote Virtual Learning Solutions, in order to assist with the expansion of the depth and breadth of the site. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.

Who are Wynchcote Virtual Learning Solutions?

Wynchcote Virtual Learning Solutions is a business established by Ken Edwards (WhyZone Founder) to commercially develop some of his teaching and learning ideas. The business is a committed supporter of the Open Source Movement and to this end is working towards making Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and dynamic web content accessible and affordable to everyone!

Wynchcote benefits from using WhyZone as a 'shop window' for its services. All advertising revenue raised as a result of visitors shopping in the WhyZone Shopping Zone and Online Shop (provided by Buy.at) will we hope help pay for the development of the WhyZone site.

Why are some web pages incomplete?

The site is still in the very early stages of its development! Why then have we posted the entire site so far 'warts and all' and not just the 'finished' pages? No website is ever finished, that's why! And we want to provide an 'open door' to anyone else out there who would like to contribute to the organic growth of the site! It's as simple as that.

So come on, get involved!

How can I become an online tutor through WhyZone?

You may be a teacher who is recently retired or on maternity leave, or in current full or part-time employment.

You may offer a subject which we do not yet include in WhyZone. If so then we should love to hear from you too.

You may already offer tutoring privately - if so then WhyZone is a great place to promote your services.

Anyone who is interested in providing Online Tutoring for students is invited to contact us to enquire about our hosting rates.

Are online tutors employees of WhyZone?

Online Tutors listed on WhyZone are not employees or agents of WhyZone.

WhyZone charges tutors a fee in return for hosting their contact details on the site.

WhyZone accepts no liability whatsover in respect of any dispute which may arise between tutor and tutee.

What kind of support will be provided by Online Tutors?

The structure is still being developed but will essentially comprise the choice of three levels of support:

  • online (email) support
  • online + voice (MSN Messenger, Skype, telephone) support
  • online + voice + paper-based (marking of submitted work and feedback) support

The aim is to provide an affordable flexible service which is within the reach of everyone.

WhyZone will serve to bring students and tutors together. The level and type of support package will then be separately agreed between the two parties.

What are the plans for expanding the site?

We are actively seeking Online Tutors, Web-editors and Contributors.

We should however like to hear from anyone who is currently or has recently retired or taken maternity leave from (in the last five years) delivering any mainstream subject in the UK.

Contact us to find out more!

We aim to be one of the premier educational websites in the UK within the next five years!

Why is www.isfun.co.uk written on some pages of WhyZone?

The website was previously called www.isfun.co.uk before rebranding in 2005 to become www.whyzone.co.uk. In fact, when you search the site you will see that it is still the www.isfun.co.uk address which appears in the search results from Google. The addresses both point to the same site.
