On Friday 10th May 2002 Westhoughton Library launched its new permanent exhibition space with an evening of Westhoughton entertainment. Members of the famous Wingates Band performed a medley of tunes followed by Eric Holt, President of the Lancashire Authors Association, who entertained with Lancashire humour and dialect poetry. Brian Clare, Mayor of Westhoughton, addressed the audience in his inimitable Howfen tongue and introduced the fabulous world famous Houghton Weavers represented by Tony Berry and David Littler.
The exhibition consists of Westhoughton memorabilia, in particular items related to the Pretoria Pit Disaster of 1910, but football, cricket and Wingates band are all featured. It will appeal to all interested in Westhoughton's social and industrial history and complements the library's comprehensive collection of local history books and other resources.
The Westhoughton Exhibition Space was funded by the North West Museums Service, Westhoughton Town Council, Bolton Museum and Bolton Libraries. The exhibition is open during normal library opening hours and is free!
