Tom Woodward Joins the Hall of Fame

at Westhoughton Library

 Tom Woodward

Tom Woodward was brought up in Westhoughton. He played for White Horse Temperance as a young boy before being signed by Bolton Wanderers in 1935.

Tom Woodward played his first game for Bolton Wanderers when he was 18 years old. His first game was at home to Stoke in February 1936. In his distinguished career with the Wanderers he played 169 League and Cup games including winning the football league north cup in 1944/45.

On the 29th August 2002 Westhoughton Library honoured his achievements by unveiling a portrait of him set amongst other local sporting greats such as Francis Lee. Westhoughton Town Councillor Brain Clare commissioned a fellow Wanderers fan and artist Ray White to paint the portrait, and, to reveal it, who better than Tom's widow Alice. Alice was joined by another Wanderers legend Roy Hartle as a surprise on her  84th birthday.

Tom's portrait is part of the permanent display which is free to visit during normal library opening times.
