Welcome to Action Deafness!

Deafness affects approximately one in seven of the British population. Of these people 8.3 million are hard of hearing, 123,000 are deafened, 70,000 are profoundly deaf and approximately 24,000 are deafblind. Action Deafness offers a range of services to promote independence, equality and opportunity among these communities. The charity Leicester and County Mission for Deaf People was established in 1897. More commonly known in recent years as the Centre for Deaf People, our working title was changed to Action Deafness in June 2006 in conjunction with the launch of a new brand. The aim of Action Deafness is not to do things for the deaf community, but to empower them to access services, employment and information themselves. We work towards an inclusive society by offering, among other things, learning, communication and interpreting services as well as advocacy and mentoring. It is important to remember that these services do not exist solely for those with a hearing loss: communication is a two way process and the hearing community also benefits greatly from our services.
