Rex

Mercury won Best Rex at Durham & Northumberland Cavy Club on 11th February, 2012

BALOO: GOLDEN AGOUTI: BOAR

Rexcetra: Lucas & Lloyd - Silver Agouti/white

To me the most outstanding quality of this breed is its good nature and natural

nosiness, making it a pig apart, the only downside of keeping this breed is you

need plenty of empty cages, as they do take a while before the coat develops.

When the babies are born they have a soft curly coat and at this stage it is very difficult to judge whether you have a good show animal or not, the only way you can ‘thin a few out’ is if any have ‘ratty faces’ or eye and ear faults.

The coat will take it’s time to develop and will go through many stages before the harsh hairs start to come through, it will gradually rise working its way up to the shoulder area.

Texture, density, length and springiness count for 60 points in the standard. The coat should be thick, short and springy. Usually if the cavy has a coat that is half an inch in length then it carriers good density and springiness. It should be coarser on top allowing for a softer coat on the sides, (but not flat) under five month animals have a softer coat all round and this is allowed on the show table

The coat I think takes a lot of preparation for a show and takes a long time to perfect the method of grooming out the guard hairs that the standard requires. A good combing regularly and a moist thumb and fore finger run through the coat pulls out lots of guard hairs also, this is the technique I found difficult to master. The best thing to do is watch one of the experts when you go to a show and don’t be afraid to ask for help, most fanciers will put you on the right track as it were.
