The relay to be changed is located in the front bonnet, next to the front fuse box.

You will need to remove the black plastic trim/liner that covers the fusebox and runs the width of the front bulkhead, behind the spare wheel. In the picture tp the left, the spare wheel has been removed to clearly show the trim to be moved.

Click pictures for larger version in new window.

To be able to manoeuvre the trim panel, you will first have to remove the plastic locating pin situated in position A in the picture to the right.

The trim can now be moved to give full access to the front fuse box. The trim will bend but be careful not to crack or split it.

Once it is out of the way, you should have a similar view to the picture on the left.

The relay that needs changing is the green relay with the metal carrier to the right of the fuse box.  Please state if you have a grey relay, as they are quite different.

To remove the relay, you will need to undo the 10mm, B, nut as seen the picture to the right.

Once the 10mm nut has been removed, the relay and it's carrier can be moved forward to allow access to the wiring loom and plug that connects to it.

This can be slightly fiddly, but there is enough room to allow the relay to slide to a horizontal position to allow easy access to the wiring plug.

Once the relay is free, you should be able to see the metal carrier plate, C, that holds the relay.

If the modified relay provided does not have the carrier plate attached, you will need to release the original relay and attach the new one. It is merely held on with the 4 visible spring tabs, 2 on each side.

To release the wiring harness from the relay, you will need to depress the locking tab on the loom plug.

Push this in and withdraw the plug from the relay. Be careful as sometimes the plug releases from the relay with a jolt. Mind your fingers!

The plug and locking tab, D, can be seen in the picture to the right. The relay shown is one that has already been modified. Your original will not have the switch and will probably be a bit dirtier!

In the best traditions of the Haynes manual, refitting is a reversal of removal.

Re-attach the relay to the side of the fusebox with the 10mm nut and replace the black plastic trim, again being careful not to bend or break it.

Operation of the switch is possible without dismantling the trim, by reaching down the side of the wiper motor.

To allow the main headlights to rise when the sidelights are selected from the drivers' switch in the cabin, position the rocker switch with the white dot down. To stop the headlamps raising, have the white dot up.
