Although openly gay for some thirty five
years, I was leading a double life for quite a period so it would be fair
to say that I have had an active gay life for much longer than that
Of course if you count what my father refered
to as 'self abuse', that goes back as far as I can remember. I certainly
remember having the hots for an evacuee boy called Billy who lived opposite
us. We must both have been at least five years old. As a newspaper delivery
boy of twelve or so, I stole copies of 'Health and Strength' magazine from
the shop where I worked and used then to good purpose.
In my teens, I abused myself over a picture
of Cliff Richards stripped to the waist in a 'Pop' magazine. Of this I
am now deeply ashamed but the only alternative I had was a collection of
pictures featuring naked Roman statues !
