WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?

Where are the children?

Voices stilled now, only the echoes of the past

Grown and gone now, leaving me bereft.

Fleeting shadows that I cannot grasp,

Always in my mind, teasing, tantalising,

Making me remember.

Baby fingers holding fast,

Hesitant steps stumbling.

Smiles, hugs and tears,

Endless quarrels, grubby knees

School boys pushing, shoving,

Finger smudges on the door, higher up now.

Doors slamming, radio blaring,

Sea cadets uniform, bugle practise

Tormenting our ears.

Parades, bands, bursting with pride.

Swimming lessons, life saving badges.

Voices deepening, no longer shrill

Aftershave on the bathroom shelf,

Girly pictures replacing popstars.

Where are the children.

The tidy house appals me, orderly, silent, empty.

But wait,childish laughter, tiny fingers

Holding fast again, grandchildren so welcome, so loved.
