POETRY THE AUSTRALIAN SAGA PART ONE (OR, THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM!)
When I was in Australia, I had a wonderful time, Everyone was so friendly, and the weather was sublime. But there were a few occasions when I wished I wasn't there, And it usually involved creep crawlies, With lots of legs and hair!
One day we went down this gold-mine, accompanied by a guide, And the darkness and the coldness did things to my inside. The guide mentioned, just in passing, that here could be found A species of hairy spider that flourished underground.
He stressed that it was harmless, but that didn't help my tum, So swiftly I moved back a bit to be closer to my son. The weather was so very hot, that day I chose to wear A dress with elasticated top that left my back and shoulders bare.
I was feeling very vulnerable wishing they were covered over, And thinking if I had a nice thick shawl, I should be in clover, Then something horribly hairy I could feel upon my back. My heart stopped for a minute and my knees went very slack!
The thing crawled slowly right to left and then from left to right, I went absolutely rigid, just struck dumb with fright. When it started across for the third time, I screamed loud and long, And the guide came hurrying then to find out what was wrong.
Another woman started screaming, pandemonium ensued, The guide wasn't sympathetic, in fact he was quite rude, He took great delight in pointing out, what he said, was clear to see, It wasn't any spider that was terrorising me.
It wasn't an alive anything, wasn't going to attack, When the chap behind me moved his head his beard brushed across my back! Well I wasn't flavour of the month, the guide made that very plain. And hopefully it will be a few years yet, before I'm underground again!
