Woodhouse Police/Fire Station and Public Library

 (C) Leeds City Libraries   This outstanding piece of architecture was built on the site of the Woodhouse Toll Bar (see also the Pack Horse pub) and used until it was demolished in 1898.

  (C) Leeds City Libraries The new building was opened on 12th March 1902 and was a combined Police & Fire station and a library. The cost sounds like a bargain - £6,201 10s 3d. When the police box system was introduced in 1932 the building was taken over by the Public Assistance Committee and used for many years by the Social Services Department.

The building saw many changes in Leeds. It's a pity the trams no longer travel on the road.

Notice the two men having a conversation in the road - try that today!

In university term time this view would be blocked with a swarm of students making their way to the University - That grey lump on the left is a part of the University and the hanging baskets on the right belong to the Pack Horse public house.

Now the building is competition for the Pack Horse - yet another Something-or-other & Firkin, in this case the Feast & Firkin in recognition of the feast (fair) that is held on nearby Woodhouse Moor.
