Welcome to the 48th season of the St Albans Chamber Choir.
The first concert given by the Chamber Choir by itself will
be in November in Old Welwyn where, having helped the parish to raise the money
for new facilities, we are pleased to have been invited back to mark their
completion; this we shall do with a programme that will give the church’s
splendid organ plenty to do.
Before this we have the first of two collaborations to
enjoy: in October we will join our local colleagues for the St Cecilia Concert
in a varied programme including A Child of Our Time by Tippett.
And then there will be another trip to the fine acoustic of the chapel at All
Saints Pastoral Centre for another of our Renaissance feasts, featuring
Victoria’s most sumptuously scored and ebullient music. For our second joint
concert of the season we shall be joined in April by our long-standing friends
from the Wormser Kantorei for Handel’s Messiah. This
performance will be part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the
Worms/St Albans twinning.
This is the last time I shall have the pleasure of
introducing and commending a Chamber Choir season to you as I shall be standing
down as conductor in July 2007. After ten years of wonderfully enjoyable
music-making now is the time for me to explore other musical avenues. My
swansong will be John Rutter’s lively, colourful and above all cheerful
setting of the Magnificat, which we will complement with settings
of the same text ranging across the six centuries of our repertoire.
Do join us.
David Hansell, Conductor
