| The following pages tell of the war time experiences of, 2934077 Sergeant George Sands MM. He served with The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and The Liverpool Scottish (Queens Own Cameron Highlanders). He was extremely proud of his beloved Camerons and the 51st Highland Division. I have taken what he told me ( he would never speak of his experiences until the last few years of his life) and after visiting the Public records office at Kew and viewing the Camerons war diaries, plus talking to other Cameron veterans, I have tried to put the events in the correct order, though I have left some in the order that he told me to show how places and times were a bit of a muddle. Whilst my Fathers memory of the events were extremely clear, the dates and locations were sometimes a little confused. Growing up, his children did not realise how much he was suffering with flash-backs and nightmares, they just knew that every year, in November, on remembrance Sunday, Dad sat in the Lounge, by himself, watching the televised service from Whitehall, with his memories and tears. In the last few years of his life, I was lucky enough to accompany him back to some of the battlefields and areas where he fought and to various well kept Commonwealth war grave cemeteries, and shared some of his memories and I am not ashamed to say, cried a lot tears with him. George Sands was extremely proud to have served with The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and 51st Highland Division. |
