Curiously enough, Gary Le Strange isn't even a real person, but a fictional character played by the actor, writer and character comedian Waen Shepherd, who writes and creates all his own music on a powerful super-computer in a tiny cluttered bedroom in Walthamstow.
Waen first had a stab at comedy at some unspecified time in the 1990s, and somehow found himself being a semi-permanent member of uber-rave spoof techno collective The Pod. He also lent his voice to the award-winning short animation The Wolfman (1999), and in 2001 wrote, directed and starred in an episode of Comedy Lab for Channel 4. After a year playing various characters in the Peterford Golf Club (with Simon Farnaby), Waen decided to combine his musical, theatrical and comedic interests in a bizarre alter ego called Gary Le Strange.
Waen caused a sensation at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003 with his show Polaroid Suitcase, which went on to win the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer. He followed up this success with the critically acclaimed Face Academy in 2004, ran a comedy night in London throughout 2005, and most recently returned to Edinburgh with Beef Scarecrow in 2006.
The Times recently included him in their list of the Top 50 British comedians, and the Rough Guide to British Cult Comedy named him one of the Top 50 Cult Comedy Icons.
