Hon. Mrs Chaworth Musters
Felley Priory was founded in 1156
and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. Later that century a new
smaller house was built, which was added to in 1886.
Work on the garden began in 1976
when the hedges were planted and the herbaceous borders were started.
There are also pergolas and knot gardens, a garden of old fashioned
roses and a medieval garden. As you explore there are many uncommon
trees and shrubs to be discovered.
The garden is also open for the
National Garden Scheme on a Sunday in April, and for the NCCPG
Plant Fairs on the first Sundays in June and October.
The Nursery
All the plants and shrubs sold are
grown in the garden, so you can see them flowering. They are mostly
old fashioned and unusual. Some are fairly tender but all of them
have survived in this garden at 600ft above sea level.
The
garden and nursery are now open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
from 9:00am until 12:30pm all year round. Every second and fourth
Wednesday 9:00am until 4:00pm and every third from Sunday 11:00am
until 4:00pm. from March until October. Refreshments are available.
The gardens are suitable for wheelchairs,
but no dogs are allowed, sorry. There is ample FREE parking. For
further information please telephone 01773 810230 or facsimile
01773 580440.
Admission £1.50 per adult,
children FREE. Felley Priory is only a 3 minute drive from the
M1 motorway (see location map).
