Jay Hayter, a keen female badminton player who I felt had been let down by 'the system':

"From my perspective, your coaching has benefited me in so many ways! I first considered having coaching when I felt that I wasn't progressing my game, or learning new techniques - I had been playing for 2 years, and wanted to feel confident that my game was good enough to start trying out for local leagues. Before we even started coaching, it was very helpful to hear from you which areas of my game were already strong and which shots I could do well.

Since I started playing, I have usually learnt shots by watching other players, but I've never really known whether I was 'doing it right' (it was usually trial and error!). Since you started coaching me, there have been several areas of my game which have improved - of these, the following had immediate effects on my game:

  • Adopting a backhand serve - the most noticeable point-scoring improvement in my game!
  • Position when receiving serve
  • Drop shots at the next

Some of your tips have taken a bit more time to get used to but are still big improvements to my game.

And this is all due to your friendly, down-to-earth advice and relaxed coaching, without being patronising or 'stuffy'! I really enjoyed the coaching sessions, and thanks to you, I didn't feel silly asking obvious questions (like how to pick up the shuttlecock off the floor using the edge of the racket!) or trying new techniques out (like returning a a backhand shot using an over-the-head forehand.)

Overall, I didn't imagine that the few coaching sessions we had would have such an effect on my game. Several of my fellow club members have commented on how much I've improved, but importantly, I can see the difference - I move around the court a lot better, I'm winning more shots, I'm better at positional play and I really feel I've made the transition to local league level! I've also taken time out from coaching to put your advice into practice, and to improve my areas of weakness, like my backhand and back court play.

I can see that at some stage in the near future, I'd like to continue to have coaching, both to refresh the techniques I learnt earlier in the year, but also to improve my game in other areas. But that seems to be the benefit of your coaching - you can have as much or as little as you want!
