Dan Penn, a club player looking to rise through the ranks of his club to play competitive badminton:

"Just over a year ago I started playing doubles at a local badminton club. I discovered, much to my frustration, that I was by far the worst player. I immediately sought help by checking out a few badminton coaches on the Internet. The first thing that attracted me to Steve was his professionalism. He sent me a questionnaire by email which asked me all about my strengths and weaknesses, so that before even stepping onto the court, he had a program all worked out.

Steve's approach to various disciplines in badminton is to break them down into elements. We start with 'shadow badminton' (without a shuttlecock) to establish good footwork and position. Once this has been improved, we focus on the correct grip, timing and stroke. This staggered approach makes the shots much easier to learn and improve upon.

I initially went through a very steep learning curve and came away feeling very good about myself. My footwork improved, my shots became more effortless and my backhand changed overnight from an awkward swipe to a more effective flick.

Steve is a very amiable person and his approach is relaxed yet professional. He is a very good listener and flexible to accommodate your needs. His dedication is faultless (he once gave up an evening, free of charge, just to watch me play in a local club!) and he brings added value to the sessions in the form of tips and tricks that give you a slight edge over other players. I highly recommend his coaching to people of all standards, and still enjoy working with him."
