Life was always an adventure, but since retirement, we seem to be
having an even more exciting time, what with Ian taking up hill-walking
and 'Munro Bagging', and me taking up the gentle art of tatting
... oh yes, and becoming addicted to the computer.
Ian had his big mountain adventure by breaking a leg and being out
all night in the Cairngorms in 1999, which meant hosting his long-anticipated
65th birthday party wearing a full-length plaster cast on one leg.
Then my big adventure was being invited to demonstrate tatting in
Japan, which was in effect a cultural exercise stemming from Ian's
family connection with Japan, so we both went.
Then came the trip to Australia in 2002, followed by another trip
in 2003, this time to Arizona. In Tucson we stayed with Ian's
cousin with whom we had already had two boating adventures on the
English canals. Who says retirement is for taking it easy!!
So now Ian is fulfilling an ambition he has nurtured for some time,
to walk 'End to End', the Big One, Land's End to John
O'Groats, off-road as much as possible, a distance of approximately
1200 miles.
People kept telling him he should raise funds for charity, and he
wanted to say thank-you to the Cairngorm
Mountain Rescue team who came to his aid when he broke his leg,
so they became one of his chosen charities, and the other one is
Christian
Aid, a cause we both support.
As the scribe of our nest, I will try to keep you informed of his
progress for the next six weeks, and the ultimate outcome of his
sponsorship.
