Watford - England - District Guide

Here's a quick rundown of the various districts in Watford.

Cassiobury

Cassiobury is a residential area, most notable for it's large public park. Watford's only London Transport railway station is located there, 15 minutes walk from the town centre, and is on the Metropolitan line. The estate itself contains an Infant and Junior school, various shops and other sporting facilities.

Cassiobury Park is a well kept open space, bounded on the western side by the river Gade, and the Grand Union canal. The park features a children's paddling pool, tennis courts, a bowling green and a croquet lawn. In summer a children's train is also in operation. On the nearest Saturday to the 5th of November, Watford Round Table hold a free large fireworks display in the park. On various Bank Holidays, a fair is also set up there. See also Parks

Central Watford

Central Watford contains an impressive array of facilities, most notably the High Street. About 1km long, it has shops all the way along including large supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Tesco's, and features most of the big name stores such as Marks and Spencer, BHS, Trewins (John Lewis), Boots (which are all located in the new Harlequin Centre), WH Smiths, C & A (located in Charter Place, which also includes Watford's indoor market, held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays), and Clements (the town's own department store).

Also in the High Street are an award winning night-club (Destiny), Watford Museum and many pubs.

Access to the town centre is very good, with two BR (or whatever they are nowadays) stations: Watford Junction (10 minutes from the High Street), and the High Street station itself. See Transport.

Garston

Garston is a residential district, on the northern side of Watford. It has it's own train station and houses the bus headquarters (Garston Garage). There is a parade of shops called Garston Parade (Photo), and two restaurants (Calendars and McDonalds drive-in). There is also a new Sainsbury's superstore, opposite an Asda superstore in North Watford. Both of these have very cheap petrol, making the Dome roundabout the only one in Watford where you can buy petrol on every corner! The area is divided into two by Garston Park (Photo), a half km square of open space.

Several senior schools are in the area, namely Parmiter's, St. Michael's Catholic School and various junior schools.

North Watford

North Watford covers a large area, divided by St Albans road (A412), which has shops all the way along it, including many restaurants, and an Asda superstore at the northern end, which also has cheap petrol. Sainsbury's Homebase is located on the southern end.

North Watford library is located next door to Asda, and although smaller than the central library, can obtain books from the same resources.

West Herts College also has Legatt's Campus in North Watford.

West Watford

West Watford has residential, industrial areas and Croxley business park. It also contains Watford General Hospital, and Watford Football Club (Photo) next door to each other in Vicarage Road. It has three BR stations (Croxley Green, Watford West and Watford FC). The business park contains several high-tech companies.

Woodside

Woodside is located on the north west side of Watford, bordering on Abbot's Langley. Woodside Leisure Centre and Stadium provide many sporting facilities for the whole of the town.

At the Leavened side of the district, lies the ex-Leavened Airdrome, which is now being turned into major film and TV studios. The James Bond film "Goldeneye" was the first film to be made here, and some of the sets could be seen from the road. A new multi-screen cinema and entertainment complex has just opened on the North Orbital Road.
