11. Shrodells - Watford General Hospital

(Photo not loaded)

This is Shrodells, Watford's General Hospital. The original building was the Union Workhouse for the poor, built in 1838, and had a look almost like a prison. This was improved in 1950, by the removal of the front wall, to reveal a courtyard. The name 'Shrodells' (meaning 'shrubberies') was taken in 1930 when the Watford Guardians Committee took over from the Watford Board of Guardians. It became Watford's only hospital in the 80's when the Peace Memorial Hospital was closed down, and has now been extended with several large modern buildings behind the one shown.

It is located at position 11 in green on the map.

Watford Hospital Radio is run from within the building, and is available throughout the hospital.
